Super Micro Computer Inc. (NASDAQ: SMCI) saw its shares climb 1.7% in Friday's trading session, closing at $39.84, as investors weighed a robust long-term revenue outlook against a significant contraction in profit margins. The stock's gains extended a post-earnings rally, with trading volume of approximately 57 million shares, near its three-month average of 58.19 million.

Revenue Forecast Soars

The company's fiscal 2027 revenue guidance midpoint stands at $68.5 billion, a figure roughly 30% above Wall Street's previous consensus of $52.5 billion. This substantial upside has fueled optimism among investors, who see significant potential if the company's order pipeline materializes as scheduled.

Margin Pressures Emerge

However, the profit outlook tells a more challenging story. Adjusted gross margin for the fiscal fourth quarter came in at 17.6%, but management's forecast for the September quarter points to a range of 10.4% to 10.8% — a midpoint drop of 700 basis points. This margin reset reflects the high costs associated with building large-scale AI systems, including expensive components and the impact of customer schedule shifts.

Fiscal Q4 Results

The company's fiscal Q4 results, released earlier this week, were a mixed bag. Revenue surged nearly 100% year-over-year to $11.12 billion, though it fell short of the $11.55 billion analysts had expected. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $1.70, well above the $0.92 consensus estimate. Adjusted gross margin also exceeded the preliminary range of 15% to 17%, landing at 17.6%.

Order Book and Customer Base

CEO Charles Liang highlighted that Supermicro expanded its customer base by several hundred during the quarter. Nine customers each contributed over $1 billion in fiscal 2026, up from four in the prior year. The company reported new orders exceeding $60 billion in Q4, a record backlog. However, Liang attributed the slight revenue miss to client-related delays in power, cooling, and networking infrastructure.

Analyst Reactions

Wall Street remains divided on the stock. Raymond James raised its price target to $48, citing clear demand trends. Wedbush and Citi maintained neutral ratings, with Citi raising its target but noting concerns about client order timing and capital requirements. Goldman Sachs kept a sell rating, arguing that rivals may limit earnings potential.

Funding and Risks

To support its growth, Supermicro completed equity and mandatory-convertible deals in June, potentially raising up to $7 billion. This capital will help finance component purchases but will dilute existing shareholders. Key risks include reliance on a limited number of customers, working capital needs, pricing competition, and potential shipment delays. Legal and governance uncertainties persist due to an ongoing review related to export-control matters.

As the market digests these mixed signals, investors will be watching for concrete evidence of order conversion and further clarity on the margin trajectory. The ambitious sales target remains a powerful draw, but the focus is shifting to the quality and profitability of those sales.
