Super Micro Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMCI) closed Friday's regular session at $28.40, up 2.4%, but the stock still ended the week with a 5.6% decline. The modest bounce came as investors weighed preliminary fourth-quarter figures that point to a substantial recovery in gross profit, though the shares lagged the broader market by a wide margin over the week.

According to early calculations based on the company's preliminary outlook, gross profit for the fiscal fourth quarter is projected to land between $1.65 billion and $1.87 billion, assuming revenue of roughly $11 billion. That would represent a sequential jump of approximately 62% to 84% compared to the $1.02 billion gross profit reported in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, when gross margin was just 9.9%.

The preliminary margin scenarios assume a gross margin of either 15% or 17%, up sharply from the 9.9% margin recorded in the prior quarter. These figures are based on the lower end of the company's revenue guidance and are not final results. Supermicro is scheduled to release its complete quarterly report on August 11.

Demand Signals Strong, But Order Quality Questioned

New orders during the fourth quarter reportedly surpassed $60 billion, a figure that dwarfs the expected quarterly sales by more than five times. However, analysts caution that these orders are likely spread across multiple quarters and may include non-binding agreements that could be delayed or canceled. The company has not provided a detailed breakdown of its backlog.

The order surge has been a key driver of optimism, but the market remains focused on the company's ability to convert that demand into profitable revenue. With $11 billion in projected sales, each percentage point of gross margin equates to roughly $110 million in gross profit. A two-point miss could shave about $220 million from the bottom line, underscoring the importance of margin confirmation in the upcoming earnings release.

Stock Performance and Market Context

Despite Friday's gain, Supermicro's stock underperformed all three major indices last week. While the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.6%, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average each gained 1.0%, Supermicro fell 5.6%, trailing the Nasdaq by 7.2 percentage points. The stock had closed at $30.10 the previous Friday and dipped to $25.70 on Wednesday before rallying over the next two sessions.

On Thursday, the company unveiled ten new rack models, highlighting a monthly production capacity of 3,000 units, with roughly two-thirds of that output featuring liquid-cooling technology. Chief Executive Charles Liang emphasized that "AI infrastructure starts with the right foundation," noting compatibility with NVIDIA's Vera Rubin and GB300 platforms.

Peer Comparison and Financial Strain

Supermicro's order momentum mirrors that of Dell Technologies, which reported AI-server orders exceeding $64 billion for its fiscal 2026 and generated $24.68 billion in AI-server sales. Dell's backlog entering fiscal 2027 stood at $43 billion. However, the comparison is imperfect, as Dell's figures cover a full year, while Supermicro's $60 billion order number is for a single quarter and may include non-binding commitments.

The company's working capital needs remain a concern. Supermicro has sought up to $7 billion in equity and equity-linked financing, partially to fund component purchases for approximately $39 billion in new AI-server orders, which represents about 18% of the announced order total. Such financing could dilute existing shareholders.

Risks and Upcoming Catalysts

Investors will have several key dates to watch. July employment data is due on August 7, followed by Supermicro's earnings call on August 11 at 5 p.m. ET. The company's preliminary figures are unaudited, and management has flagged risks including customer concentration, tariffs, and potential order cancellations. Additionally, the board is reviewing transactions related to previously reported export-control matters.

The market's reaction to the earnings report will likely hinge on whether the company can deliver on its margin improvement promises. A single percentage point swing in gross margin could alter quarterly gross profit by roughly $110 million, making this the most critical metric to watch.
