Shares of Teradyne (NASDAQ:TER) climbed 7.0% to $343.02 in premarket trading on Wednesday, following the company's preliminary third-quarter guidance that significantly exceeded Wall Street expectations. The midpoint of the Q3 revenue outlook came in roughly 20% above the LSEG consensus estimate, underscoring robust demand for semiconductor test equipment fueled by artificial intelligence applications.

The strong guidance provided a measure of relief after the stock had fallen 13.2% from July 22 through Tuesday's close, settling at $320.65. Despite the premarket recovery, shares remained about 7.2% below that recent high, suggesting lingering caution among investors.

Teradyne reported stellar second-quarter results, with revenue surging to $1.329 billion—more than double the year-ago figure. Adjusted earnings per share climbed to $2.47 from $0.57 in the prior-year period. Semiconductor Test contributed $1.122 billion, or 84% of total sales. However, the adjusted operating margin contracted by 380 basis points sequentially to 33.7%, while gross margin slipped 110 basis points to 59.8%.

The company's preliminary Q3 guidance points to a 5.9% sequential decline in revenue from the record Q2 level, with adjusted earnings projected to fall 19.0%. This sharper drop in earnings relative to revenue suggests either a less favorable product mix or rising operating expenses, raising questions about profit leverage in the near term.

Chief Executive Greg Smith attributed the upbeat Q3 outlook to robust AI-related demand, noting increased investment in wafer-fabrication equipment. The momentum was echoed by peer Advantest Corp. (TYO:6857), which reported a 38.7% year-on-year rise in fiscal first-quarter test-system sales, driven by AI processors, high-performance computing, and memory-test requirements. Advantest raised its full-year sales forecast to 1.714 trillion yen from 1.420 trillion yen, signaling that the cycle is broad-based rather than supplier-specific.

Despite the demand tailwinds, margin compression remains a key concern. Most of the sequential revenue growth in Q2 came from smaller business units—Product Test and Robotics accounted for $36 million of the $47 million gain, or approximately 77%. Semiconductor Test revenue increased by only $11 million sequentially, highlighting a need for more diversified growth to avoid further margin erosion.

Investors will closely watch the management earnings call scheduled for 8:30 a.m. ET for clarity on the factors behind the sharper earnings decline. The Federal Reserve's policy decision later Wednesday could also influence risk sentiment, as major technology sector results this week test market optimism regarding AI-related capital investments.

Risks remain concentrated: Semiconductor Test accounts for 84% of revenue, leaving Teradyne vulnerable to customer delays, supply chain disruptions, and export restrictions. With reduced liquidity, premarket quotes are also more volatile. The report provides short-term demand relief but leaves margin uncertainty unresolved, making Wednesday's call critical for assessing the company's profit trajectory.
