Shares of Unitree Technology Co., Ltd. (SHA:688836) closed their first day of trading on the Shanghai Stock Exchange on Wednesday with a stunning 460% gain, far surpassing the company's initial public offering (IPO) price. The stock ended the session at RMB 845, up from its offer price of RMB 150.80, after reaching an intraday peak of RMB 1,100. This extraordinary debut pushed the humanoid robot manufacturer's market capitalization to approximately RMB 342 billion, or roughly $50 billion.
The astronomical valuation, however, stands in stark contrast to the company's current financial performance. According to Reuters Breakingviews calculations, the closing price implies a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of approximately 857 times management's projected 2026 earnings. For context, the average P/E multiple on the STAR Market, where Unitree lists, is around 130. This disparity highlights the extreme scarcity premium attached to a rare robotics IPO in China, rather than reflecting immediate profit growth.
Record-Breaking Demand
The retail frenzy was unprecedented. Investors oversubscribed the public portion of the offering by nearly 8,000 times, with each applicant having only a 0.018% chance of receiving an allocation. The company offered just 10% of its expanded share capital, restricting the available supply and fueling the price surge. The IPO raised approximately RMB 6.1 billion.
This debut stands out even against the backdrop of an already hot Chinese IPO market. Mainland IPOs have risen an average of 279% on their first day this year, yet Unitree's gain more than doubles that figure. The divergence suggests that investor appetite is concentrated on scarce, high-profile listings rather than reflecting a broad risk-on sentiment, especially as the CSI 300 index slipped 3% on the same day.
Financials and Growth Trajectory
Unitree has demonstrated significant operational growth. Revenue surged from RMB 393 million in 2024 to an expected RMB 1.70 billion in 2025, representing a 333% year-over-year increase. Adjusted net profit is projected to reach RMB 590.8 million in 2025, up from RMB 77.5 million in 2024. The company's main-business gross margin stands at a robust 60.13%, with overseas sales accounting for 43.65% of revenue.
However, growth is normalizing. First-quarter 2026 revenue rose 68.49% year-over-year, while adjusted profit fell 52.55% due to increased research and sales spending. The company's preliminary first-half 2026 revenue is expected to be between RMB 1.052 billion and RMB 1.128 billion, with adjusted profit in the range of RMB 236 million to RMB 283 million.
Market Comparisons and Analyst Views
Unitree's valuation is significantly higher than its peers. The company trades at roughly 201 times its 2025 revenue, compared to 36 times at the IPO price. In contrast, UBTech Robotics Corp. Ltd. (HKG:9880), a Hong Kong-listed competitor, saw its shares drop over 10% as Unitree made its debut.
Analysts have expressed caution. Kangyuxiao Li of Morningstar noted that while Unitree demonstrates reliable performance and competitive returns at scale, the valuation is stretched. Venture investor Yan Kai called Unitree a "top-tier player" but suggested that its pricing is driven more by political and economic conditions than by traditional valuation models.
Strategic Backing and Risks
Unitree counts Tencent Holdings Ltd. (HKG:0700), Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (HKG:9988), and DeepSeek among its pre-IPO investors, providing potential access to funding, cloud services, and distribution channels. The company plans to use IPO proceeds for robot development, production, and embodied-AI systems.
Despite the enthusiasm, significant risks remain. The United States has prohibited the import of future foreign-manufactured humanoid and quadruped robots, and Unitree derived about 13% of its 2025 revenue from the U.S. Broader trade restrictions, sluggish repeat orders, or faster price cuts could squeeze margins. Additionally, the limited free float could exacerbate volatility.
Investors are now looking for evidence that Unitree can translate its visibility into consistent commercial usage. Orders, utilization rates, and service revenue will be key metrics to watch. After a 460% debut, there is minimal margin for error in execution.
