NEW YORK, July 30, 2026 – The Nasdaq Composite surged 2.43% in midday trading Thursday, driven by a powerful rally in artificial intelligence-related stocks, even as the broader market showed signs of weakness. The S&P 500 rose 1.29% to close at 7,410.61, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.68%. However, beneath the surface, more than 70% of S&P 500 stocks declined, and only nine of the Dow's 30 components posted gains.
The divergence between the headline indices and underlying breadth was stark. The capitalization-weighted S&P 500 proxy gained 0.97%, but the equal-weight version fell 0.83%, a gap of 1.79 percentage points that market strategists say reflects concentrated investor confidence in AI-related areas rather than a broad-based increase in risk appetite.
Microsoft and Meta: A Tale of Two Cash Flows
Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) soared 15.0% to $449.12 after reporting fiscal-year earnings that showed annual revenue topping $331 billion and Azure cloud revenue crossing $100 billion. The company reported quarterly operating cash flow of $55.4 billion and free cash flow of $19.6 billion, representing 35.4% of operating cash flow. CEO Satya Nadella described the results as "a very strong close to what was a record fiscal year." Microsoft expects to remain free-cash-flow positive in fiscal 2027 despite significant infrastructure investments.
In contrast, Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) slid 9.0% to $532.79, even though revenue climbed 28%. The social media giant reported operating cash flow of $31.86 billion, but free cash flow stood at just $784 million, or 2.5% of operating cash flow, as capital expenditures hit $31.08 billion. Meta tightened its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to $130 billion to $145 billion, from a previous range of $125 billion to $145 billion.
The stark contrast in free cash flow conversion—Microsoft's ratio was about 14 times that of Meta's—sheds light on the divergent stock performances. "The concern is no longer just how much these companies are spending," said Anna Rathbun, CEO of Grenadilla Advisory. She noted that competitive pressures could keep AI budgets elevated even in a higher-rate environment.
Semiconductor Stocks Surge
Semiconductor shares advanced alongside Microsoft, with Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) surging 15.0%, Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX) jumping 18.3%, and Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) rising 12.2%. Lam Research posted a record quarterly revenue of $6.72 billion, with operating margins expanding to 37.4% from 35.0% in the prior quarter. However, Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) declined 2.52% after providing a softer profit outlook.
The macro environment remained uneven. Advance second-quarter GDP grew at an annualized rate of just 1.5%, well below economists' forecasts of 2.1%. June's headline PCE inflation fell to 3.7% year-over-year, down from 4.1% in May, while core PCE slipped to 3.3% from 3.4%. The Federal Reserve held interest rates steady at its July meeting with a 9-3 vote, as three officials supported a quarter-point hike.
The yield on the 30-year Treasury bond reached 5.2444%, its highest level since 2007, putting pressure on high-valuation growth stocks. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) fell 1.9%, while Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) gained 5.0% ahead of their earnings reports after the close. Investors are watching for updates on spending and cash flow that could influence the breadth of any rebound.
The market's advance remains heavily dependent on a narrow group of AI-related stocks. A rise in long-term yields, further Fed tightening, or disappointing cash flow from Apple and Amazon could quickly unwind recent gains.
