Shares of Applied Optoelectronics (NASDAQ: AAOI) extended their recent rally on Tuesday, with the stock indicated higher in premarket trading after a strong Monday session. The optical networking company has seen its market value swell by approximately $1.77 billion over the past two trading days, reflecting growing investor enthusiasm for AI-driven data center infrastructure.
AAOI closed Monday's regular session up 16.9% at $110.21, and premarket quotes on Tuesday suggested an additional 5.6% gain, with shares indicated at $116.34. The surge brings the two-day advance to 23.3%, a move that has caught the attention of traders and analysts alike. With approximately 80.24 million shares outstanding, the current quote implies an equity value of roughly $9.34 billion, up from about $7.57 billion at Friday's close.
The rally is not isolated to AAOI. Other optical-networking and manufacturing peers have also posted gains, suggesting a sector-wide repositioning rather than a company-specific catalyst. Lumentum Holdings (NASDAQ: LITE) is up 13.5% since Friday, Coherent Corp. (NYSE: COHR) has gained 14.3%, and Fabrinet (NYSE: FN) has risen 7.9%. The coordinated move points to growing confidence in the optical component supply chain, which is seen as a critical enabler for AI and machine learning workloads.
Q2 Earnings Preview: Growth Expectations High
Investors are now looking ahead to AAOI's second-quarter earnings report, scheduled for Thursday after market close. The company has guided for revenue between $180 million and $198 million, with a midpoint of $189 million. At the midpoint, that would represent a 25.0% increase from the first quarter's $151.1 million and an 83.5% jump from the $103.0 million reported in the same period last year.
The company also expects a non-GAAP gross margin of 29% to 30% and non-GAAP earnings per share ranging from a loss of three cents to a profit of three cents. These figures underscore the rapid growth trajectory but also highlight the ongoing costs of scaling production.
Capacity Expansion and Order Momentum
Management has been vocal about its expansion plans. CEO Thompson Lin noted in May that the company completed its first volume shipment of 800G products in the first quarter. CFO Stefan Murry reported that production capacity reached nearly 100,000 units per month by the end of the quarter. The company is now expanding its Pearland, Texas facility by nearly 400,000 square feet, aiming to produce more than 500,000 units per month of 800G and 1.6T products by year-end.
Demand visibility has also improved. AAOI announced a 1.6T order valued at over $200 million, with shipments slated to begin in early Q3 and continue into Q4. This order exceeds the company's entire Q2 revenue guidance, though it will be recognized in future periods.
Execution Costs and Balance Sheet
Despite the growth, execution costs remain elevated. First-quarter gross margin declined to 29.1% from 30.6% a year earlier. Operating cash outflow widened to $85.4 million, and capital expenditures doubled to $58.2 million as the company invests heavily in capacity.
To fund these investments, AAOI raised approximately $490 million in net proceeds through an at-the-market equity offering in April, issuing about 4.8 million new shares. As a result, shares outstanding have increased by 50% year-over-year, a dilution that investors are closely monitoring.
Valuation and Risks
AAOI's forward price-to-sales multiple stands at 6.44, comparable to Coherent's 6.37 but more than double Fabrinet's 3.01. The company does not report a trailing price-to-earnings ratio as it continues to post negative earnings.
Key risks include significant customer concentration—the top 10 clients accounted for 98% of revenue in Q1—and ongoing cash burn. Any delays in hyperscaler adoption, shipping disruptions, or increased pricing pressure could quickly erode the premium. Thursday's earnings call will be a critical test, with investors looking for evidence of shipment progress, margin discipline, and a convincing Q3 outlook.
