New York, July 21, 2026 – Dell Technologies Inc. (NYSE:DELL) saw its shares climb 5.7% to $427.10 in after-hours trading on Tuesday, following a promising margin update from rival Super Micro Computer Inc. (NASDAQ:SMCI). The move comes as investors reassess the profit potential of the AI server market, which has been a key growth driver for both companies.
Super Micro projected its fourth-quarter gross margin in a range of 15% to 17%, a significant improvement from its earlier forecast of 8.2% to 8.4%. While revenue remained near the lower end of its $11 billion to $12.5 billion outlook, the company reported incoming orders exceeding $60 billion, highlighting sustained demand. The margin surprise triggered a rally across the server hardware sector, with Super Micro surging 18.4% in after-hours trading.
The positive reaction is particularly notable for Dell, which has faced margin compression as it ramps up AI server production. The company reported a quarterly gross margin of 17.8%, down from 21.1% a year earlier. The market interpreted Super Micro's margin recovery as a signal that Dell may also be able to improve profitability as it scales its AI business.
The valuation impact was substantial. Dell's implied market value increase approached $15.1 billion, roughly 4.6 times Super Micro's $3.2 billion gain. Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (NYSE:HPE) also rose 4.56%, adding $3.1 billion in market cap, while HP Inc. (NYSE:HPQ) saw only a marginal 0.09% increase, underscoring that the rally was driven by server-related financials rather than broader hardware trends.
Dell's AI server revenue reached $16.1 billion in the May quarter, surpassing its PC unit's $14.6 billion. Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clarke emphasized that the AI opportunity "shows no signs of slowing," with the company projecting approximately $60 billion in AI-server revenue for fiscal 2027. However, the overall gross margin decline of 3.3 percentage points from the prior year has been a concern.
Super Micro attributed its anticipated margin recovery to changes in customer mix and product assortment, factors that investors see as applicable to Dell. The stock had been under pressure recently, falling 8.9% over the prior week, including a 9.8% drop on July 15. After a 3.7% decline on Monday, Tuesday's 6.0% gain helped recover some losses.
The broader market also provided support, with the Nasdaq rising 1.3% on a rebound in AI stocks. Dell outperformed the index by nearly five percentage points. Looking ahead, Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is set to report earnings after Wednesday's close, with its 2026 capital expenditure outlook currently forecast at $180 billion to $190 billion. Any adjustments to this guidance could impact expectations for AI infrastructure spending.
The Federal Reserve begins a two-day meeting on July 28, and Dell is scheduled to report its next earnings on September 3. In the near term, similar company updates are likely to influence trading. However, uncertainty remains: Super Micro's numbers are preliminary and unaudited, after-hours trading involves lower liquidity, and Dell's customer demographics may differ. Investors are closely watching whether Dell can convert AI demand into higher-margin sales.
