NEW YORK, July 24, 2026, 4:07 p.m. EDT – The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 234.86 points on Friday, ending the session at 51,946.51, as a retreat in oil prices provided a tailwind for equities. Despite the day's advance, the blue-chip index posted a weekly decline of 0.38%.
The gains were not evenly distributed. The Dow's price-weighted structure meant that a handful of high-priced stocks contributed disproportionately to the index's rise. Five components alone accounted for approximately 266 points, while two financial stocks subtracted about 169 points.
Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Travelers Companies Inc. (TRV) together added roughly 132 points, representing 56% of the Dow's total advance. Apple shares gained $11.36, contributing 67.5 points, while Travelers rose $10.89, adding 64.7 points. Home Depot Inc. (HD), IBM Corp. (IBM), and Salesforce Inc. (CRM) also posted strong gains, contributing 49.1, 44.7, and 39.8 points respectively. On the downside, American Express Co. (AXP) fell $14.71, subtracting 87.4 points, and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) dropped $13.73, knocking off 81.6 points.
The broader market showed a stark divergence. The S&P 500 edged up just 0.05% to 7,411.96, ending the week down 0.61%. The Nasdaq Composite declined 0.64% to 24,975.82, and fell 2.13% for the week, pressured by losses in semiconductor stocks. Intel Corp. (INTC) dropped roughly 6% even after issuing a positive outlook and outlining increased investment plans.
Oil prices provided a brief respite, with Brent crude falling nearly 4% to around $96 per barrel in Friday's trading. Despite the drop, both Brent and U.S. crude remained on track for weekly gains of close to 7%.
Investors continue to scrutinize whether artificial intelligence-related earnings can justify rising capital expenditures. Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL) disclosed its first-ever cash burn of $5.9 billion and raised its projected 2026 spending by $15 billion. Peter Andersen, CEO at Andersen Capital Management, highlighted the concern: “The fear of missing out is becoming more like a fear of massive overbuilding.”
Two major events dominate the outlook for next week. The Federal Reserve will hold its meeting from July 28-29, with a policy decision expected on Wednesday. As of Thursday, Fed funds futures priced in a 36% probability of a 25 basis point rate hike. Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) and Meta Platforms Inc. (META) are set to report earnings after Wednesday's close, followed by Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) and Apple Inc. (AAPL) after Thursday's close.
Early estimates from LSEG show S&P 500 earnings grew 26.5% in the second quarter, with over 80 companies having reported by Wednesday. Investors will assess whether company guidance aligns with these robust expectations.
Risks remain, including a sudden oil supply cut, an unexpected Fed rate hike, or a shift in AI investment sentiment that could erase Friday's gains. The Dow's price weighting means that while the index can end higher, it may mask significant divergence among its components.
