Electronic Arts is strategically leveraging the FC 27 player ratings voting to drive interest in its premium Ultimate Plus edition, priced at $149.99, as the company navigates its post-acquisition landscape. The move comes on the heels of the $55 billion take-private transaction that closed on August 4, with the company now focusing on monetizing its flagship football franchise.

The ratings voting, which began on August 21, allows fans to influence the Ultimate Team squad revealed at launch. This community engagement is a key component of EA's broader campaign to convert player interest into sales, particularly for the high-margin Ultimate Plus edition. The $149.99 price point is more than double the cost of the Standard edition at $69.99, representing a 114.3% premium. The Ultimate edition, priced at $99.99, sits in between with a 42.9% premium.

EA's emphasis on live services is well-founded, as they contributed $5.383 billion in fiscal 2026, accounting for 71.5% of total revenue of $7.531 billion. Net bookings in Global Football grew at a mid-single-digit pace, underscoring the franchise's importance to EA's financial health. The Ultimate Team mode remains a cornerstone of this recurring revenue model.

The Ultimate Plus edition includes 10,000 FC Points distributed over five months and five Premium Passes, with an early-bird offer available until August 31. This creates urgency ahead of the ratings voting deadline on September 10 and the early access launch on September 18. The global release follows on September 25, with the ratings campaign concluding on October 9.

Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland lead the men's rankings with a rating of 91, while Alexia Putellas tops the women's list with the same score. The ratings discussion will transition to the 'Destined for Glory' squad, available from September 25, further fueling engagement. FC 27 features a roster of over 21,000 players, 800 clubs and national teams, and more than 130 stadiums.

John Shepherd, vice president and general manager of EA SPORTS FC, emphasized the game's design to deepen players' connection to football and to one another. The launch will also include a free, limited FC 27 Lite demo, broadening the initial audience while premium editions target high-spending users.

The financial backdrop is significant. The take-private deal involved a $20 billion debt facility, representing 36.4% of the transaction value and approximately 7.8 times fiscal 2026 operating cash flow of $2.553 billion. Former shareholders received $210 per share. While EA shares are no longer trading, comparable companies like Take-Two Interactive (NASDAQ:TTWO), Roblox Corporation (NYSE:RBLX), and Sony Group (NYSE:SONY) provide market context, each closing Friday below their 52-week highs.

Analysts maintain positive outlooks on these peers, with average price targets implying upside of 19.5% for Take-Two, 28.9% for Roblox, and 25.4% for Sony. This suggests continued investor confidence in scalable gaming platforms, though it does not directly reflect on EA's private valuation.

The upcoming week presents a key conversion challenge for EA. The company must translate ratings participation into premium sales before the August 31 deadline. Subsequent early-access engagement will reveal whether demand persists beyond pre-orders. Risks include the possibility that viewer ratings may not lead to increased spending, potential resistance to the $150 price point, and the impact of licensing costs or diminished Ultimate Team sales on cash conversion post-buyout.
