Shanghai Enflame Technology (688801) made a spectacular stock market debut on September 11, closing its first day of trading at CNY 397 per share, a 179.2% surge from its initial public offering price of CNY 142.18. The rally pushed the company's market capitalization to approximately CNY 170.9 billion ($25.5 billion), a remarkable valuation for a firm that has yet to turn a profit.

The massive first-day gain was fueled by a scarcity effect rather than purely by investor enthusiasm for the company's technology. Enflame sold 43.04 million new shares, representing 10% of its enlarged share capital, but only 17.90 million shares — a mere 4.16% of the company — were freely tradable immediately. The rest were locked up in strategic placements and other restrictions, limiting the available float and driving up demand.

Shares opened at CNY 410, reached an intraday high of CNY 475, and closed at CNY 397 on volume of 13.61 million shares. At the peak, the implied valuation briefly exceeded CNY 204 billion. The stock trades on the Shanghai Stock Exchange's STAR Market under the ticker 688801.

Valuation at a Premium

Even before the debut, the IPO was not cheap. Enflame's prospectus indicated an IPO valuation of CNY 61.19 billion, or 61.8 times its 2025 sales. At Friday's close, the market capitalization of CNY 170.85 billion represented roughly 172.5 times the company's audited 2025 revenue of CNY 990.16 million, according to a calculation by TS2.

The company argues that its growth trajectory justifies the lofty multiple. Enflame forecasts revenue of CNY 2.3 billion to CNY 3.0 billion for the first nine months of 2026. Against that larger range, Friday's valuation implies a price-to-sales ratio of 57 to 74 times, still high but reflecting expectations of rapid scaling.

Growth vs. Losses

Enflame's financials show a company in transition. Revenue grew 37% in 2025, while its net loss narrowed to CNY 1.16 billion from CNY 1.51 billion in the prior year. The company projects a loss of CNY 700 million to CNY 860 million for the first nine months of 2026, with profitability potentially arriving in 2026 or 2027. However, the prospectus also revealed accumulated losses of CNY 4.16 billion as of September 2025, underscoring the challenges ahead.

Tencent's Dual Role

Tencent, the Chinese internet giant, owns 17.95% of Enflame after the offering and accounted for 83.79% of its 2025 revenue. This relationship provides Enflame with a major reference customer and a foothold in data-center workloads, but it also creates significant concentration risk. Any change in Tencent's procurement plans or internal chip strategy could dramatically impact Enflame's growth prospects.

For Tencent investors, the stake offers exposure to a domestic AI chip supplier at a time when U.S. export controls have made access to advanced foreign processors uncertain. Yet the interdependence cuts both ways: Tencent is both the largest shareholder and the source of more than four-fifths of Enflame's sales, making the relationship a double-edged sword.

Fundraising and Outlook

Enflame raised CNY 6.12 billion in the IPO, net of offering costs. The proceeds are earmarked for developing fifth- and sixth-generation AI chips, software, and large-scale computing systems. This funding reduces near-term financing pressure, but the company still faces the commercial test of expanding its customer base beyond Tencent while improving gross margins enough to cover its substantial cost structure.

The limited float in the initial trading days could lead to continued price volatility. The clearest validation of the bull case would be sustained rapid revenue growth alongside a meaningful reduction in Tencent's revenue share. If sales rise while concentration remains near 84%, the company will have scaled, but the stock's central customer risk will persist.
