FuelCell Energy (NASDAQ:FCEL) shares experienced a significant surge of 28.7% in Thursday afternoon trading, reaching $23.36 before settling back to $23.26. This sharp increase was driven by a broader sector rally ignited by Bloom Energy's (NYSE:BE) impressive quarterly earnings report, which showcased the growing demand for fuel cell technology in powering artificial intelligence data centers.
Bloom Energy's second-quarter results were nothing short of exceptional, with revenue hitting a record $1.065 billion, a 165.5% year-over-year increase. The company also posted adjusted earnings that exceeded analyst expectations by approximately 90%. CEO KR Sridhar declared, "Bloom is now a standard for AI onsite power," underscoring the company's pivotal role in the AI infrastructure boom.
The positive sentiment rippled across the fuel cell sector, with Bloom Energy shares advancing 25.4% to $205.33. Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) rose 7.9%, and Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP) gained 9.0%. However, FuelCell Energy's rally was notably more pronounced, outpacing the broader technology sector by 25.5 percentage points and tripling the gains of its peers.
Despite the sector-wide enthusiasm, FuelCell Energy's fundamental financial picture remains challenging. The company reported a net loss of $77.6 million for its fiscal quarter ended April 30, 2026, with revenue declining 5% year-over-year to just $35.6 million. Its gross margin remained deeply negative at -36.3%, and operating margin stood at -218.9%. In stark contrast, Bloom Energy generated operating income of $196.3 million and achieved positive operating cash flow.
FuelCell Energy's management is banking on future growth, pointing to a sales pipeline that has expanded to four gigawatts, a sequential increase of 267%. However, the company acknowledges that these are negotiations rather than finalized contracts, and its contracted backlog actually declined by 9.9% to $1.14 billion. CEO Jason Few described the strategy as "extending the grid to the data center," with plans to expand manufacturing capacity to 500 megawatts per year, requiring an investment of $200 million to $275 million.
The company recently completed a capital raise, issuing 12.32 million shares at $21 each, generating estimated net proceeds of $245.4 million. While Thursday's rally lifted shares 10.8% above the offering price, the estimated equity value of $1.86 billion is still 7.5% below the pre-offering benchmark, highlighting the dilutive impact of the stock issuance.
FuelCell Energy's stock has been highly volatile, having fallen 15.9% over the previous two trading days before Thursday's rebound. Despite the rally, the stock remains 38.6% below its intraday peak on June 30. The company also faces the overhang of up to 12 million performance-based warrants with an exercise price of $26.44, which could further dilute existing shareholders if exercised.
Investors are now closely watching for FuelCell Energy to secure confirmed data-center contracts and improve its unit economics. Until then, the company remains a smaller, more volatile proxy for Bloom Energy's proven demand in the rapidly growing AI power market.
