Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE: HPE) saw its shares retreat in after-hours trading on Wednesday, even as the company delivered a record-breaking fiscal third quarter. The stock dropped 3.7% to $49.89, down from its regular-session close of $51.83, according to Yahoo Finance data. The pullback comes despite a 34% surge in revenue to an all-time high of $12.2 billion.

The market's reaction highlights a growing tension: while HPE's top-line growth is impressive, investors are increasingly focused on whether the company can convert that momentum into sustained margin expansion. The company raised its fiscal 2027 revenue growth outlook to 13%-17%, but the after-hours decline suggests some skepticism about the sustainability of its profitability gains.

Record Quarter, Mixed Signals

HPE reported revenue of $12.21 billion for the quarter ended July 31, 2026, a 33.7% increase year-over-year. GAAP operating profit soared to $1.39 billion, compared to $247 million in the same period last year. On a non-GAAP basis, operating margin expanded to 16.2% from 8.5%, and adjusted diluted earnings per share came in at $1.11, well above the company's guidance range of $0.88 to $0.93.

Despite these strong numbers, the stock's decline suggests that expectations had been building ahead of the report. The company's forward guidance, while positive, may not have been enough to satisfy investors who were hoping for even more aggressive growth projections.

Growth Drivers: Networking and AI

The company's growth is being fueled by two key segments: networking and cloud & AI. Networking revenue jumped 74.9% to $2.89 billion, with data-center networking sales more than doubling to $382 million. This growth is largely attributed to the integration of Juniper Networks' switching technology into HPE's AI data-center portfolio.

Cloud & AI revenue climbed 25.4% to $9.04 billion, and the segment's operating margin improved to 17.0%, up from 7.0% a year earlier. This segment remains the company's largest and most profitable, and its continued strength is a positive sign for HPE's strategic direction.

Management Optimism

CEO Antonio Neri expressed confidence in the company's trajectory, stating, "AI is becoming a multi-year growth driver for HPE." CFO Marie Myers highlighted a record order backlog and disciplined execution as key factors behind the strong performance.

The company's raised fiscal 2027 framework includes revenue growth of 13%-17%, non-GAAP EPS growth of 16%-20%, and a non-GAAP operating margin of 14%-15%. HPE also lifted its minimum free cash flow expectation to $5.0 billion for fiscal 2027.

Financial Outlook and Shareholder Returns

For fiscal 2026, HPE raised its free cash flow outlook to at least $3.75 billion and reiterated its commitment to return no less than 75% of fourth-quarter free cash flow to shareholders. The quarterly dividend remains at $0.1425 per share, payable on or about October 16 to shareholders of record as of September 17.

The company is scheduled to participate in the Citi Global TMT Conference on September 8, where management is likely to provide additional color on its growth strategy and margin trajectory.

Market Context and Risks

HPE's results come at a time when AI-related spending is driving demand for data-center infrastructure. The company's ability to capitalize on this trend, particularly through its Juniper integration, will be crucial. However, analysts note that the integration could make it harder to assess organic growth, and margins may be subject to volatility due to component costs and order timing.

After-hours trading volumes are typically lower, which can amplify price movements. Investors will be watching to see if the stock stabilizes in regular trading on Thursday.
