IREN Limited (NASDAQ: IREN) saw its shares tumble 12.5% on Friday, closing at $35.45, after the company unveiled an ambitious capital expenditure program that raised concerns among investors about the pace of its AI revenue growth. The sharp selloff erased approximately $2.0 billion in market capitalization, underscoring the market's apprehension over the company's aggressive expansion strategy.

Massive Capex vs. AI Revenue

The company plans to invest between $25 billion and $30 billion in capital expenditures by fiscal 2027, a figure that dwarfs its current market value of roughly $14 billion. This spending is aimed at scaling its AI cloud infrastructure, but the company has only secured contracts for $4 billion in annualized AI revenue, with about $1 billion already active.

Investors are questioning whether the scale of the investment justifies the expected returns, especially given the significant execution risks and the long timeline before the full revenue stream materializes. The disconnect between the capital outlay and the current revenue pace has become the central point of contention.

Strong AI Cloud Growth, But Profitability Takes a Hit

Despite the stock's decline, IREN reported robust growth in its AI cloud segment. For the quarter, AI cloud revenue surged 110% sequentially to $70.5 million, surpassing Bitcoin mining revenue for the first time. On a full-year basis, AI cloud revenue jumped nearly eightfold to $128.8 million, while Bitcoin mining contributed $578.2 million.

However, the company's overall financial performance was mixed. Total quarterly revenue declined 5% to $137.2 million, and adjusted EBITDA plummeted 68% to $19.2 million. The company also recorded a net loss of $684.0 million, which included a $450.4 million impairment charge primarily related to decommissioning mining hardware as part of its transition to AI.

The adjusted EBITDA margin for the fiscal year fell to 35% from 54%, highlighting how the rapid hiring and infrastructure build-out are impacting operating leverage.

Funding and Liquidity

To finance its expansion, IREN has raised $2.1 billion through equity issuance and $3.0 billion from convertible notes, resulting in a cash position of $5.90 billion as of the end of June, plus an additional $1.67 billion in restricted cash. While these funds provide near-term liquidity, they also introduce dilution and refinancing risks for existing shareholders.

The company's balance sheet is being stretched to support the massive capex plan, and any delays in project execution or cost overruns could further strain its financial position.

Analyst Sentiment and Outlook

Despite the negative market reaction, Wall Street analysts remain largely optimistic about IREN's long-term prospects. Seventeen analysts currently have a Buy rating on the stock, with an average price target of $78.19, implying significant upside from current levels. The next major catalyst will be the rollout of contracted AI capacity through 2027, which will determine how quickly revenue can catch up with capital expenditures.

However, there are notable risks. Construction delays, limited power supply, and customer concentration could hinder growth. Additionally, further share offerings or increased borrowing might weigh on shareholder value.

The share price decline signals that investors are more concerned about financing than demand. IREN needs to convert its $4 billion in contracted AI revenue into cash flow ahead of a $30 billion expansion that could strain its balance sheet. The coming quarters will be critical in demonstrating whether the company can execute on its ambitious plans and deliver the returns that justify the massive investment.
