Lumentum Holdings (NASDAQ: LITE) shares traded nearly unchanged on Tuesday as the optical components maker prepared to release its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings after the market close. The stock was at $817.06, up 0.44%, with investors bracing for a potential double-digit move.

Options pricing suggests a 13% shift in the share price by Friday, translating to roughly $106 in either direction from the current level. This reflects the binary nature of the upcoming report, which could solidify or challenge the company's status as a top AI hardware play.

Revenue estimates from Visible Alpha stand at $989.91 million, with adjusted earnings per share projected at $2.98. Lumentum's own guidance calls for revenue between $960 million and $1.01 billion, and adjusted EPS of $2.85 to $3.05. Analysts' projections align closely with these ranges.

The key metric, however, is the adjusted operating margin. Management has guided for a non-GAAP operating margin between 35% and 36% for the quarter. This would represent a significant expansion from the 32.2% reported in fiscal Q3, and a sharp contrast to the 10.8% seen in the year-ago quarter.

Lumentum's recent performance has been stellar. In fiscal Q3, revenue surged 90% year-over-year to $808.4 million, while the adjusted operating margin nearly tripled. CEO Michael Hurlston highlighted margin expansion as a key driver, noting in May that it was "the more impressive part" of the company's recent performance.

The growth is being fueled by demand for optical components and systems used in AI data centers. The cloud and networking components segment, which accounts for roughly two-thirds of revenue, grew 77.3% year-over-year in fiscal Q3. Systems revenue grew even faster, at 121.1%, driven by high-speed optical networks.

Nvidia's recent $2 billion investment in Lumentum, coupled with a commitment to purchase several billion dollars worth of products, has reinforced the demand outlook. Lumentum is also expanding U.S. production, including a new 240,000-square-foot indium-phosphide plant in Greensboro, North Carolina, slated to begin operations in mid-2028.

Wall Street remains bullish, with a consensus Buy rating and an average price target of $1,126, implying roughly 38% upside from Tuesday's close. Targets range from $800 to $1,400, reflecting the wide range of expectations for margin trajectory.

Analysts project fiscal 2026 revenue of $2.99 billion and EPS of $8.23, putting the forward price-to-earnings ratio near 99. This rich valuation underscores the high stakes: any disappointment in margins or guidance could trigger a sharp selloff, even if demand remains robust.

Investors will get the first indication after 16:00 EDT when results are released. Sales around $990 million would meet expectations. The primary focus will be on whether the adjusted operating margin hits the 35%-36% target and whether the outlook for the next quarter supports continued margin expansion.
