MARA Holdings (NASDAQ:MARA) experienced a challenging week as its shares closed at $10.09 on Friday, marking a 10.9% decline. The drop came despite a broader market rally, with the Nasdaq Composite advancing 5.2% over the same period. The company's preliminary second-quarter results, released Friday, revealed a significant disconnect between its expanding mining capacity and actual Bitcoin production, raising questions about operational efficiency.

Operational Discrepancy

According to the company's unaudited figures, energized hashrate surged 22.5% to 70.3 EH/s, yet Bitcoin output increased only 2.7% to 2,422 coins. This stark contrast suggests that the additional computing power is not translating into proportional production gains. The energy-only spread, a key profitability metric, fell to approximately $32,635 per Bitcoin, a 50% decline from the same quarter last year.

Revenue for the second quarter totaled $174.9 million, down 26.7% from $238.5 million in Q2 2025. The average price of Bitcoin mined dropped 27.9% to $71,325, while purchased energy costs per Bitcoin rose 14.7% to $38,690. These figures underscore the mounting pressure on mining margins, especially as the company's revenue remains heavily concentrated in Bitcoin mining, which accounted for 97.2% of total revenue.

AI Infrastructure Ambitions

MARA has been pivoting toward artificial intelligence infrastructure, leveraging its energy resources, which it says could expand to 4.8 gigawatts. However, progress remains in early stages. The Long Ridge facility is awaiting Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approval, and the Texas site requires ERCOT and interconnection authorizations. Management anticipates securing at least one infrastructure lease before year-end, but execution remains the key test, as CEO Fred Thiel emphasized: "Our shareholders should judge us not by our vision, but by our execution."

The market's reaction suggests skepticism. MARA shares fell another 5.3% on Friday following the results, closing at $10.09. In comparison, peers showed mixed performance: Riot Platforms (NASDAQ:RIOT) was up 1.7% for the week, while CleanSpark (NASDAQ:CLSK) dropped 10.6% and Hut 8 (NASDAQ:HUT) fell 17.7%. IREN Limited (NASDAQ:IREN) gained 12.0%, benefiting from its own AI-related announcements.

Balance Sheet and Leverage

MARA's balance sheet provides some cushion. As of June 30, cash stood at $421.3 million, and the company held 35,577 Bitcoin valued at $2.1 billion at fair value. However, gross debt totaled $2.45 billion, with 9,270 Bitcoin either on loan or pledged as collateral. The company also maintained approximately $1.5 billion in available at-the-market equity capacity.

Analysts remain cautiously optimistic, with a consensus rating of Buy and an average price target of $15.39, implying 52.5% upside from current levels. However, targets range from $5.50 to $27, reflecting significant disagreement over the valuation of MARA's power assets and Bitcoin exposure.

Market Outlook

Investors will closely watch upcoming inflation data, with July CPI due Wednesday and PPI on Thursday. An above-expected reading could heighten rate concerns, particularly for high-beta crypto stocks. Bitcoin's 24/7 trading also poses gap risk ahead of Monday's open.

MARA's AI expansion hinges on regulatory approvals, tenant commitments, and new financing. Rising power costs or a slowdown in output growth could further erode mining profitability. The company's ability to execute on its AI strategy while managing its debt burden will be critical in the coming months.
