NIO Inc. (NYSE:NIO) closed Monday's trading session down 3.2% at $4.23, matching its 52-week low, as investors braced for the electric vehicle maker's second-quarter earnings report due Tuesday. The stock opened at $4.33 but failed to recover, extending a slide that has seen shares fall 8.6% over the past six sessions since August 21.

Options markets are pricing in a significant post-earnings move of approximately 8.76%, or about $0.39, based on Monday's closing price. This implies a potential trading range of roughly $3.84 to $4.62 following the report. While such moves are not predictions, they reflect the uncertainty surrounding the upcoming results.

Trading volume was notably heavy, with 45.42 million American Depositary Shares (ADS) changing hands, a 74% increase over the 26.06 million average. This heightened activity underscores the market's focus on NIO's earnings and guidance.

Delivery Miss Adds Pressure

The decline in share price comes despite rapid unit expansion. NIO delivered 107,658 vehicles in the second quarter, a 49.4% increase year-over-year. However, this figure fell short of management's minimum forecast of 110,000 units by 2,342 vehicles, raising concerns about demand and execution.

Analysts project revenue of approximately $4.95 billion for the quarter, alongside a loss of $0.05 per ADS. This compares to revenue of $2.63 billion in the same period last year. NIO's own guidance ranged from RMB32.78 billion to RMB34.44 billion.

Margins Take Center Stage

With volume growth already priced in, investors are increasingly focused on profitability. NIO's vehicle margin improved to 18.8% in the first quarter of 2026, up from 18.1% in the fourth quarter of 2025 and a significant jump from 10.2% a year earlier. Chief Financial Officer Stanley Yu Qu noted the margin has increased "quarter-over-quarter for four consecutive quarters."

The margin expansion has shifted the earnings equation. In the first quarter, NIO reported revenue of RMB25.53 billion and held cash, restricted cash, and investments totaling RMB48.2 billion. The company also posted a positive non-GAAP operating profit, a key milestone.

July Deliveries Show Momentum

Recent delivery data suggests continued demand. In July, NIO delivered 35,934 vehicles, a 71% increase compared to the same month last year. The majority came from its primary brand with 20,008 units, while ONVO contributed 10,155 deliveries and firefly added 5,771.

However, the company faces significant risks. China's intense vehicle price competition could erode margins rapidly, and recent improvements may be diluted by a less favorable product mix. NIO also remains exposed to execution challenges, funding requirements, currency fluctuations, and risks associated with its U.S.-listed ADRs.

Analyst Views and Outlook

The range of analyst valuations is broad. Of the two analysts tracked by Google Finance, opinions are split between buy and hold, with a consensus price target of $6.50, representing a 53.7% premium to Monday's closing price. However, this limited coverage carries less weight compared to Tuesday's reports on margin and guidance.

NIO is scheduled to release results before the U.S. market opens on September 1, with management holding a conference call at 08:00 EDT. The company's near-term trajectory will depend on whether increased deliveries can sustain margin improvements and operating profitability.
