NIO Inc. (NYSE:NIO; HKEX:9866; SGX:NIO) saw its shares tumble 10.2% in the days following its second-quarter earnings release, closing Friday at $3.80. The market's reaction underscores a critical test: the electric vehicle maker must deliver between 36,230 and 39,230 vehicles in September to meet its third-quarter guidance, a hurdle that some analysts view as a knife-edge.

The company's unaudited outlook calls for 108,000 to 111,000 deliveries in Q3. With July and August combined totaling 71,770 units, September's performance is decisive. Simply matching August's 35,836 deliveries would leave NIO 394 vehicles short of the guidance floor, a margin of error that has investors on edge.

NIO's second-quarter results showed robust growth, with revenue surging 69.1% year-over-year to 32.14 billion yuan and deliveries climbing 49.4% to 107,658 units. However, sequential comparisons revealed a less favorable picture: vehicle margin slipped 30 basis points to 18.5%, and the GAAP net loss widened 59% to 528 million yuan, even as adjusted profit came in at a slim 26.1 million yuan.

The accounting split highlights the tension between growth and profitability. While adjusted operating profit reached 206.9 million yuan, the GAAP operating loss stood at 347.2 million yuan, reflecting share-based compensation and organizational charges. CFO Stanley Yu Qu emphasized "healthy gross and vehicle margins" despite cost pressures, but the sequential erosion is why investors remain cautious.

Product mix will be a key factor in September. August deliveries included 21,174 NIO-brand vehicles, 8,810 ONVO models, and 5,852 FIREFLY cars, with the premium NIO brand accounting for 59% of the total. Stronger sales of higher-margin models like the ES8 and ES9 could support profitability, while growth in lower-priced segments may dilute margins.

NIO's liquidity position offers some cushion. The company reported 56.7 billion yuan ($8.4 billion) in cash, restricted cash, short-term investments, and long-term deposits as of June 30. CEO William Bin Li reaffirmed the delivery target of 108,000 to 111,000 units, with corresponding revenue guidance of 33.29 billion to 34.05 billion yuan.

Risks remain, including intensifying EV price competition in China, potential product delays, and demand fluctuations. The market's verdict is clear: NIO must prove it can grow without sacrificing the margin improvements that made adjusted profitability possible. September's delivery numbers will be a pivotal indicator.

Hong Kong investors echoed the sentiment, with NIO shares falling 11.1% to HK$29.50 during the week. The stock's performance in the coming weeks will hinge on whether NIO can clear the delivery hurdle and sustain investor confidence in its path to sustainable profitability.
