NIO Inc. (NYSE: NIO) saw its shares decline 1.18% to $4.18 in premarket trading on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, following the release of its second-quarter earnings report. While the company posted impressive year-over-year revenue growth, its forward guidance for the third quarter suggested a significant deceleration, prompting investor caution.

The Shanghai-based electric vehicle maker reported second-quarter revenue of RMB32.14 billion, a 69.1% increase from the same period last year. Vehicle sales were particularly strong, climbing 80.1% to RMB29.06 billion. The vehicle margin also improved substantially, rising 8.2 percentage points to 18.5%, reflecting better cost management and a favorable product mix.

However, the market's reaction focused on the third-quarter outlook. The midpoint of NIO's revenue guidance implies only 4.8% sequential growth from the second quarter. Delivery guidance is even more conservative, with the midpoint suggesting just 1.7% growth quarter-over-quarter. This has raised concerns that the company's rapid expansion may be hitting a plateau.

Despite the strong top-line performance, profitability remains elusive on a GAAP basis. NIO reported an adjusted operating profit of RMB206.9 million, marking its second consecutive quarter of positive adjusted operating results. However, the company still posted a GAAP operating loss of RMB347.2 million and a net loss of RMB528 million, underscoring the gap between adjusted and reported metrics.

Founder and CEO William Bin Li highlighted that all three brands—NIO, ONVO, and FIREFLY—delivered growth in both sales volume and average transaction price. The company delivered 107,658 vehicles in the second quarter, a significant achievement. However, the third-quarter delivery guidance of 108,000 to 111,000 vehicles implies a slower pace, with September deliveries needing to reach between 36,230 and 39,230 units to hit the target.

Cost pressures are also mounting. Research and development spending rose 13.8% from the first quarter, while selling, general, and administrative expenses increased 26.5%, driven by product launch marketing and personnel costs. These investments are necessary for long-term growth but are weighing on near-term profitability.

On a positive note, NIO's balance sheet remains robust. The company held RMB56.7 billion in cash, restricted cash, investments, and long-term deposits. CFO Stanley Yu Qu confirmed that the company generated positive operating cash flow, providing a cushion for ongoing investments. Additionally, NIO's chip subsidiary, Shenji, raised RMB493 million in two funding rounds, valuing it at RMB12.25 billion, with NIO retaining a 59.95% controlling stake.

The market's reaction underscores the challenges facing NIO as it navigates intensifying competition in China's electric vehicle market. Price wars and launch-related expenses could pressure margins, while any shortfall in September deliveries would likely weigh on investor sentiment. The company's earnings call at 08:00 ET and regular trading at 09:30 ET will provide further clarity on how the market interprets these results.
