Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) is bracing for a pivotal week as investors await second-quarter results that could determine whether the fuel-cell company can sustain its recent rally. The stock closed Friday at $2.18, up 5.3% for the session and 5.8% for the week, but the focus is shifting to the company's cash position and near-term liquidity.
The upcoming earnings report, scheduled for Monday after the market close, comes amid a broader market upswing. The Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.3% on Friday, marking a 5.2% weekly gain, supported by a surprise decline of 23,000 in July payrolls that pushed bond yields lower and boosted risk assets.
Plug Power's preliminary cash position as of June 30 stood at $162 million in unrestricted cash, down from $223.2 million at the end of March. The company consumed $150 million in operating cash during the first quarter. When combined with anticipated near-term liquidity from asset sales, the company estimates it has enough to fund approximately 1.6 quarters of first-quarter operating cash usage. This preliminary calculation does not represent official company guidance.
Analysts project second-quarter revenue in the range of $167.7 million to $169.1 million, with consensus pointing to a per-share loss of eight cents. This would represent a slight sequential increase from the first quarter's $163.5 million but a year-over-year decline of roughly 3%. The company reported a GAAP gross margin of negative 13% in the first quarter, a significant improvement from negative 55% a year earlier, and service costs per fuel-cell unit declined by over 30%.
Chief Executive Jose Luis Crespo reiterated in July that the company remains on track to achieve its EBITDAS positive target in the fourth quarter of 2026. However, investors will be looking for tangible evidence of progress in the upcoming report, particularly in terms of cash burn reduction and margin expansion.
One key development to monitor is the sale of Plug Power's Graham, Texas, asset, which was expected to close around July 31. Along with an initial closing in New York, these transactions are projected to generate over $80 million in near-term liquidity. The company's broader infrastructure strategy aims to improve liquidity by more than $275 million through asset disposals, releasing restricted cash, and reducing maintenance expenses.
Wall Street remains divided on Plug Power's outlook. FactSet's consensus rating is Hold, with seven analysts rating the stock positively, 11 assigning Hold, and four giving negative recommendations. The average price target is $3.48, implying potential upside of 59.6%, though individual targets range from $0.75 to $7.00.
Plug Power outperformed its direct competitors last week, with Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP) up 2.8% for the week and FuelCell Energy (NASDAQ:FCEL) down 5.5%. Trading volume on Friday reached 54.7 million shares, below the 65-day average of 64.7 million shares. The stock rose an additional 2.15% in after-hours trading, closing at $2.2269.
As the company prepares to report, the market will be watching closely to see whether management can reassure investors about its cash runway and progress toward profitability. The upcoming conference call at 4:30 p.m. EDT will be a critical forum for executives to address these concerns.
