Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) saw its shares advance in U.S. premarket trading on Monday, as investors positioned themselves ahead of the company's second-quarter earnings release. The stock climbed 5.3% to $2.30, extending a 4.8% gain from the previous week, with market participants closely monitoring the hydrogen fuel cell maker's cash position and liquidity outlook.

The company is scheduled to report its Q2 2026 financial results after the closing bell, followed by a conference call at 4:30 p.m. ET. Early projections from data providers indicate revenue in the range of $169.1 million to $172.8 million, with a consensus loss per share of approximately eight cents. These figures suggest a modest sequential improvement from the first quarter's $163.5 million in revenue but a decline from the $174.0 million reported in the same period last year.

Investors are particularly focused on the company's cash consumption, which has been a persistent concern. As of June 30, Plug Power reported approximately $162 million in unrestricted cash, a significant drop from $223.2 million at the end of March and $368.5 million at the close of 2025. The first quarter saw operating cash usage of $150 million, meaning the June cash balance represents only about 1.08 times that outflow. This ratio is not a formal runway estimate but highlights the urgency of improving margins and monetizing assets.

The company has been working to bolster its liquidity through asset sales and operational improvements. On July 13, CEO Jose Luis Crespo emphasized that "the improvement in margins, effective management of our liquidity, and the growth of our sales pipeline remain our critical focus." Management has projected over $80 million in additional short-term liquidity from pending transactions, including deals in Texas and New York, though these remain subject to closing conditions and are not yet reflected in the June cash balance.

Analyst sentiment remains cautious. According to FactSet data, the consensus rating is "Hold," with 6 buys, 1 overweight, 11 holds, 1 underweight, and 3 sells. The average price target stands at $3.48, implying a potential 59.6% upside from Friday's close of $2.18. However, the wide range of targets—from $0.75 to $7.00—reflects significant divergence in views on the company's path to profitability and cash flow sustainability.

Plug Power's peers in the fuel cell sector have also faced headwinds. Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP) closed Friday at $2.62, down 60.1% from its 52-week high, while FuelCell Energy (NASDAQ:FCEL) ended at $20.43, 46.1% below its peak. Plug Power itself sits 52.4% off its high, though it posted the largest gain among the three on Friday.

With a market capitalization of approximately $3.04 billion, Plug Power trades at about 4.3 times projected 2025 revenue. Nearly 25% of the float is sold short, which could amplify any earnings surprise. The company continues to operate at a loss and burn cash, but management remains committed to achieving positive EBITDA in the fourth quarter. Investors will be looking for evidence that improved gross margins—which swung from -31% in Q2 2025 to -13% in Q1 2026—are translating into better cash flow.

The key test comes after Monday's close, as management faces questions about the pace of asset sales, working capital management, and the timing of hydrogen demand recovery. Any updates on the Texas and New York transactions will be closely scrutinized, as will guidance for the second half of the year.
