Rocket Lab (NASDAQ:RKLB) closed Friday at $82.83, capping a 27.5% surge over five sessions, as investors digested a major defense contract and a successful Electron launch. The rally pushed the company's market capitalization to roughly $50 billion, a valuation that now trades at approximately 54 times consensus 2026 revenue estimates. With second-quarter results due Monday, the bar for outperformance has risen significantly.

The pre-earnings momentum was fueled by two key announcements. On August 4, Rocket Lab secured a $397 million contract with the U.S. Space Force for spacecraft, launch services, and operational support. The deal includes an option that brings the total potential value higher, and the satellite launches are slated for the company's Neutron rocket. Just two days later, the company completed its 92nd Electron mission, underscoring its operational cadence.

CEO Peter Beck highlighted the company's unique position: “Our vertically integrated, constellation-class satellite capabilities, mission operations, and launch services uniquely position us to deliver innovative solutions.” The contract win and launch success helped Rocket Lab outperform the broader market, though it lagged some peers over the five-day stretch. Redwire (NYSE:RDW) jumped 57.7%, Intuitive Machines (NASDAQ:LUNR) gained 32.9%, and Firefly Aerospace (NASDAQ:FLY) rose 31.4% during the same period.

Looking at the numbers, preliminary consensus points to second-quarter revenue of $231 million, slightly below the $232.5 million midpoint of company guidance ($225 million–$240 million). Analysts expect a loss per share of $0.08, compared to the $0.07 loss in the first quarter. Gross margin is projected to come in between 33% and 35%, down from 38.2% in Q1. Backlog stood at $2.2 billion as of the last report, and investors will be watching for updates on that front.

The earnings call, scheduled for 5 p.m. EDT Monday, will be closely scrutinized for guidance, margin trajectory, cash flow, and progress on Neutron. With the stock up nearly 19% year-to-date, merely meeting expectations may not suffice. The market will demand evidence that growth is accelerating and that the Neutron rocket program is on track, as any delays could weigh on sentiment.

Another critical factor is the company's proposed acquisition of Iridium Communications (NASDAQ:IRDM), structured with a floating exchange ratio. Iridium shareholders will receive $27 in cash plus shares valued at approximately $27, with the ratio adjusting based on Rocket Lab's reference price. The collar ranges from $67.50 to $112.50, and the final ratio will be determined by a 10-day volume-weighted average price shortly before closing, expected in mid-2027.

At Friday's close, the illustrative ratio would be 0.3260 Rocket Lab shares per Iridium share, 18.5% below the maximum 0.4000. This means the rally has made Rocket Lab's stock more expensive as acquisition currency, reducing the number of shares Iridium holders would receive. The deal, which includes Iridium's $871.7 million in expected 2025 revenue and $495 million in operational EBITDA, is financed with a $3.6 billion bridge facility. Regulatory and shareholder approvals are still pending, adding uncertainty.

Analyst sentiment remains bullish, with a consensus price target of $111.31, implying about 34% upside from Friday's close. However, targets vary widely, from $64 to $150, reflecting divergent views on execution and financing. Piper Sandler initiated coverage with a Neutral rating and $83 target, while KeyBanc raised its rating to Overweight with a $135 target. Deutsche Bank reiterated a Buy with $120, and Morgan Stanley lifted its rating to Overweight with $105.

The upcoming earnings release will test whether the stock's valuation is justified. Beyond the headline numbers, investors will focus on backlog growth, margin sustainability, and any updates on Neutron's timeline. The Iridium deal's floating ratio adds another layer of complexity, as a higher stock price reduces dilution but also signals confidence. As Rocket Lab navigates these challenges, the market's patience will be key.
