Samsung Electronics (KRX:005930) shares experienced their largest single-day gain in recent memory on Thursday, August 20, 2026, closing up 9.49% at KRW 271,000. The surge added approximately KRW 137.5 trillion to the company's market capitalization, which now stands at KRW 1,736.95 trillion.

The rally was fueled by reports that the company is preparing a shareholder return package that could exceed KRW 100 trillion, a figure that has been widely circulated in South Korean media. The package, which is expected to be reviewed by the board before the end of August, is said to include a special dividend and a commitment to distribute 50% of free cash flow to shareholders, as reported by MoneyToday.

Investors have responded positively not just to the headline number, but to the signal it sends about Samsung's capital allocation strategy. The market's reaction suggests a clearer, more aggressive approach to returning capital, beyond the regular dividend program already in place.

The 50% free cash flow distribution rule is not new; Samsung's confirmed 2024–2026 plan already allocates half of free cash flow to shareholders, with regular annual dividends of KRW 9.8 trillion. However, the scale of the new program, its timing, and the potential for a special distribution represent a significant shift, which accounts for the market's enthusiasm.

Thursday's gain recovered most of Wednesday's 7.82% decline, but the stock remains 27.6% below its 52-week high of KRW 374,500. The volatility reflects broader market concerns about the sustainability of AI-related investment and its impact on memory chip demand.

Fundamentals remain strong. In the second quarter, Samsung reported record revenue of KRW 171.5 trillion and operating profit of KRW 89.5 trillion, with the semiconductor division contributing KRW 89.2 trillion. The foundry business, which has been struggling since 2022, is now showing signs of recovery, with price increases of up to 15% for advanced services, driven by robust demand from U.S. and Chinese clients.

Analysts are overwhelmingly bullish, with a consensus rating of Strong Buy and a target price of KRW 471,908, implying 74.1% upside from Thursday's close. The stock trades at 12.06 times trailing earnings, with an indicated dividend yield of 0.62%.

The upcoming board meeting is the next key catalyst. Investors are looking for clarity on three points: the covered period, the size of the special dividend, and whether a share buyback is included. These details will determine whether the plan delivers new value per share or merely accelerates existing commitments.

Market participants remain cautious, however, given the potential for the plan to be approved at a reduced size, with a greater emphasis on dividends, or to face delays. Additionally, a rapid decline in memory prices, foundry utilization, or AI-related orders could derail the rally.
