The Social Security Administration (SSA) has released the payment schedule for May 2026, with the first major disbursement set for Wednesday, May 13. This batch targets beneficiaries whose birthdays fall between the 1st and the 10th of any month. Subsequent payments will be issued on May 20 and May 27, following the standard Wednesday distribution pattern based on birth dates.
According to SSA data from April 2026, approximately 75.5 million individuals received Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Of these, 71.1 million were Social Security recipients. The average monthly payment for retired workers stood at $2,081.16, while disabled workers averaged $1,634.70, and survivor benefits averaged $1,625.56.
Payment Schedule Details
The SSA determines payment dates by the beneficiary's birth date: those born from the 1st to the 10th are paid on the second Wednesday of the month; the 11th through 20th on the third Wednesday; and the 21st through 31st on the fourth Wednesday. For those receiving benefits based on another person's work record, the payment date follows that worker's birth date.
Certain groups do not follow this standard schedule and received their May payments on May 1. These include individuals who began receiving Social Security before May 1997, those collecting both Social Security and SSI, certain beneficiaries living abroad, and people whose Medicare premiums are covered by their state.
Cost-of-Living Adjustment and Medicare Impact
This year's benefits include a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), tied to inflation as confirmed by the SSA. For retired workers, this pushed the average monthly benefit to approximately $2,071 in January 2026. However, many beneficiaries will not see the full increase in their net payments due to rising Medicare Part B premiums. The standard monthly premium for Part B, which covers outpatient care and doctor visits, increased by $17.90 to $202.90 in 2026. These premiums are often automatically deducted from Social Security checks.
AARP's Myechia Minter-Jordan described the COLA as a "lifeline of independence and dignity," though she acknowledged that many older adults still face financial challenges with everyday expenses. SSA Commissioner Frank Bisignano noted that the adjustment is designed to keep benefits aligned with current economic conditions. Emerson Sprick of the Bipartisan Policy Center cautioned that cost-of-living increases "can't solve all" the issues facing households or the program's long-term solvency.
June 2026 Payment Calendar
The SSA has also locked in the June payment schedule: SSI payments will be issued on June 1, with the exception group following on June 3. Standard Social Security payments will be made on June 10 for those born 1st-10th, June 17 for birthdays 11th-20th, and June 24 for those born 21st-31st.
Long-Term Outlook
Congress remains a key variable for the future of Social Security. According to the 2025 trustees' summary, the combined trust funds are projected to pay full benefits through 2034. After that, without legislative action, incoming revenue would cover only about 81% of promised benefits. This funding gap underscores ongoing debates about the program's sustainability.
If a payment does not arrive on the scheduled date, the SSA advises recipients to wait three additional mailing days before contacting the agency. This guidance applies to direct deposits as well, as bank processing delays can sometimes make a benefit appear missing temporarily.
