Shares of SoFi Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:SOFI) experienced a notable decline of 8.9% on Wednesday, closing at $15.25. The drop came despite the company reporting record quarterly revenue and raising its full-year sales outlook, as investors shifted their focus to profitability metrics.

The midpoint of SoFi's 2026 adjusted net revenue guidance increased by approximately $145 million compared to the April forecast, now ranging from $4.75 billion to $4.85 billion. However, the company left its adjusted EBITDA target unchanged at about $1.6 billion and adjusted EPS steady at roughly 60 cents. This decision implies a decline in the full-year EBITDA margin to approximately 33.3% at the midpoint, down from 34.4% in the previous guidance, which contributed to the stock's negative reaction.

Second-Half Margin Challenge

Following its first-half performance, SoFi now needs to achieve roughly $902 million in EBITDA during the second half of 2026. Revenue at the midpoint would total about $2.51 billion, reflecting a 36.0% margin compared to 30.4% in the first half. This required margin expansion highlights the challenges ahead for the company as it seeks to convert its revenue growth into bottom-line profitability.

Q2 2026 Earnings Beat

SoFi outperformed Wall Street expectations for the second quarter. Adjusted net revenue came in at $1.206 billion, surpassing the LSEG consensus of $1.12 billion by 7.6%. Adjusted EPS of $0.12 exceeded expectations by one cent. Adjusted EBITDA reached $357.8 million, up 44% year over year, while GAAP net income totaled $156.6 million, a 61% increase from the prior year.

Chief Executive Anthony Noto commented that "spending remains strong, demand remains strong," and noted that credit performance was in line with or surpassed projections. His remarks reinforced the outlook for loan volumes, though the composition of revenue raised some concerns among analysts.

Revenue Mix Shifts

The revenue composition showed a notable shift. Lending revenue surged 63% to $724.8 million, accounting for nearly 60% of total consolidated GAAP revenue. Financial Services revenue rose 29% to $466.3 million, while the Technology Platform segment saw a 23% decline to $84.5 million, representing only about 7% of total revenue. This decline was attributed to the loss of a major client, though the segment showed sequential improvement with a 13% increase from the first quarter.

Fee-based revenue totaled $472.3 million, representing 39% of overall revenue. The Loan Platform Business contributed $143.3 million, approximately 30% of the fee-based segment, remaining tied to lending operations.

Analyst Reactions and Member Growth

Analysts offered mixed views on the results. Tim Switzer of KBW described the outcome as a "lower-quality beat" and maintained his underperform rating. Andrew Jeffrey of William Blair reiterated his outperform recommendation, signaling differing opinions on the strength of SoFi's growth trajectory.

Member economics showed improvement, with the cross-buy rate rising to 51% from 35% a year earlier. For the first time, SoFi's product additions outpaced member growth by a two-to-one ratio. The company added 1.1 million new members and 2.2 million new products during the quarter. The personal-loan charge-off rate improved to 2.62% from 2.83% in the prior year.

Funding and Outlook

Funding continued to provide strong support, with deposits climbing by $5.3 billion to $45.5 billion. SoFi projected annualized savings of $712.6 million compared with warehouse funding. Net interest margin increased by four basis points to 5.98%.

Looking ahead, the company faces risks including a potential slowdown in consumer spending, softening in loan-sale markets, or ongoing platform-client attrition. Loan originations increased 69%, while the default assumption for personal-loan fair value climbed to 4.77% from 4.57%. SoFi will need to achieve the anticipated increase in second-half margins and restore growth in its Technology Platform to address market concerns regarding the quality of its revenue.
