SoFi Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: SOFI) saw its shares climb 4.6% on Wednesday, closing at $17.84, after Scotiabank initiated coverage with a Sector Outperform rating and a price target of $25. The new target implies a potential upside of 40.1% from the previous close, reflecting a growing conviction in the company's strategic pivot toward fee-based revenue streams.

The stock opened at $17.05 and reached a high of $17.94 before settling, with trading volume of 40.49 million shares—slightly below the average of 44.49 million. In early premarket trading on Thursday, shares slipped 1.0% to $17.66, still 7.9% below the August 27 close of $19.18.

Scotiabank's Bullish Thesis

Scotiabank's coverage report emphasizes SoFi's transformation from a cyclical lender into a broader financial services platform. The $25 target is based on the premise that the market will increasingly value SoFi for its diversified revenue base, which includes lending, financial services, and technology platform segments.

In the most recent quarter, fee-based revenue totaled $472.3 million, representing 39% of total revenue and a 22% increase from the previous quarter, according to SoFi's SEC filings. This growth underscores the company's success in cross-selling products to its expanding member base.

Funding Advantages and Cost Savings

SoFi's deposit funding strategy continues to provide a significant cost advantage. Interest-bearing deposits carry a rate of 3.07%, which is 156 basis points cheaper than warehouse facilities at 4.63%. With deposits funding over 90% of average liabilities, SoFi estimates annualized interest savings of $712.6 million.

This funding edge is a key pillar of the company's profitability story, allowing it to offer competitive loan rates while maintaining healthy margins.

Financial Performance

SoFi reported adjusted net revenue of $1.21 billion, up 40% year-over-year, and adjusted EBITDA of $357.8 million, representing a 30% margin. GAAP net income reached $156.6 million, marking a clear inflection point according to CEO Anthony Noto.

The average number of products per member stood at 1.54, with 51% of new products opened by existing customers—a testament to the company's cross-selling capabilities.

Segment Mix Remains Uneven

While the overall results were strong, segment performance varied. Lending revenue surged 63% to $724.8 million, while Financial Services revenue grew 29% to $466.3 million. However, Technology Platform revenue declined 23% to $84.5 million, and the Financial Services contribution margin slipped six points to 46%.

This uneven mix has led some analysts to question the sustainability of the rerating, with the average price target among 16 analysts standing at $20.57—well below Scotiabank's projection.

Analyst Sentiment and Upcoming Catalysts

According to Google Finance, the analyst community remains divided: seven rate the stock as Buy, six as Hold, and three as Sell. The low target is $15.00, while the high is $25.00.

Investors will be watching for further commentary from management at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference on September 8, where any updates on loan sales or funding strategies could influence the thesis.

Risks to the Bull Case

Several risks could derail the $25 scenario. Rising benchmark yields may weigh on loan fair values and increase funding costs. Expanding loan balances could lead to higher credit losses. Additionally, a continued decline in Technology Platform performance or narrower Financial Services margins would undermine the platform valuation narrative.
