UiPath Inc. (NYSE: PATH) saw its shares climb 3.0% to $18.53 in Thursday afternoon trading, as investors positioned ahead of the company's fiscal second-quarter earnings release. The stock's advance came despite the company's guidance suggesting a significant slowdown in new annual recurring revenue (ARR) additions.

According to the company's outlook, net new ARR for the second quarter is expected to land between $28 million and $33 million. The midpoint of this range, $30.5 million, represents a 38% decline from the $49 million in net new ARR reported in the first quarter. This lowered bar reflects the company's cautious stance amid a shifting market for automation software.

Trading volume remained subdued, with approximately 25.6 million shares exchanged by 1:15 PM EDT, representing about 38% of the stock's three-month average daily volume. The stock opened with a 4.2% gain, eased to a 2.4% increase by mid-morning, and settled at a 3.0% advance in early afternoon trading.

Revenue and Profitability Outlook

UiPath expects second-quarter revenue to range between $395 million and $400 million, with ARR projected at $1.929 billion to $1.934 billion. The company also anticipates non-GAAP operating income of approximately $75 million. At the midpoint, revenue would decline 5.0% sequentially from the first quarter's $418 million, underscoring the seasonal and demand dynamics at play.

Non-GAAP operating margin is expected to be around 18.9% at the midpoint of revenue guidance, down from 22.1% in the first quarter. This margin compression highlights the company's investment in agentic AI products and go-to-market initiatives, which CEO Daniel Dines has described as moving "from pilot to production."

Cash flow remains a bright spot. In the first quarter, UiPath generated $132 million in operating cash flow and $130 million in adjusted free cash flow, representing a robust 31% of revenue. Stock-based compensation totaled $53 million, nearly double GAAP operating income, a point of focus for investors monitoring shareholder dilution.

Balance Sheet and Capital Allocation

UiPath ended April with $1.42 billion in cash and marketable securities, providing ample flexibility for share repurchases, acquisitions, and product development. The company allocated $244 million to buybacks during the quarter, supporting its share price.

At $18.53 per share, UiPath's market capitalization stands at approximately $9.6 billion, or about 5.0 times first-quarter ARR. The stock trades 6.6% below its 52-week high, having more than doubled from its low over the past year, which sets a high bar for the earnings report.

Customer Retention and Growth Drivers

Dollar-based net retention was 109% in the first quarter, indicating that existing customers expanded their spending by 9% after accounting for churn and contractions. However, with net new ARR slowing, growth will increasingly depend on acquiring new customers and accelerating adoption of agentic solutions.

Investors have two key events to watch: CFO Ashim Gupta will present at Citi's technology conference on September 8, and the company's investor day is scheduled for September 22. These forums may provide additional color on the company's strategic direction and growth trajectory.

The primary risk is that revenue or ARR misses expectations, which could pressure the stock's recent rebound. Lower margins may also draw attention to cash conversion efficiency. Conversely, stronger-than-expected adoption of agentic products could boost renewal rates and lift the outlook.

The after-hours response may hinge on a single metric: whether agentic demand can surpass the intentionally reduced ARR-addition threshold. With the bar set low, investors will be looking for signs that the company's AI-driven offerings are gaining traction in the enterprise.
