Vistra Corp. (NYSE: VST) experienced a sharp decline in its stock price last week, losing approximately $4 billion in market capitalization as shares fell 8.05%. Despite this selloff, a cadre of analysts remains optimistic, projecting potential gains of up to 62% from current levels.

The power producer's shares closed Friday at $136.21, down 1.96% on the day and marking a second consecutive session of losses. The five-day slide has pushed the stock to a year-to-date decline of 15.57%, with shares now trading 38% below their 52-week high of $219.82. Trading volume on Friday was roughly 9% higher than the 50-day moving average, indicating heightened investor activity.

Analyst Sentiment Remains Bullish

Despite the recent downturn, four analysts have reaffirmed positive ratings on Vistra, setting price targets that imply significant upside. Morgan Stanley raised its target to $227 from $212 on Friday, representing a 66.7% increase from the current price. DBS initiated coverage with a $216 target, while TD Cowen and BNP Paribas adjusted their targets but maintained buy ratings. The average price target among 19 analysts stands at $220.56, with a range from $106 to $313.

The wide dispersion in targets underscores the market's uncertainty about Vistra's valuation, particularly as it relates to the company's AI-driven growth narrative. Investors have been treating Vistra as a long-duration asset, sensitive to movements in Treasury yields. The 10-year yield hovering near 4.71% on Friday has increased the discount rate applied to expected future cash flows from power demand.

Strong Fundamentals Underpin Optimism

Vistra's operational performance remains robust. In the second quarter, the company reported adjusted EBITDA from ongoing operations of $1.77 billion, a 31% increase year-over-year. This growth was driven by higher realized energy and capacity prices, particularly in Texas and the East region. The integration of Lotus plants also contributed positively to results.

CEO Jim Burke described the quarter as "another strong quarter," and management reaffirmed its 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance of $6.8 billion to $7.6 billion. The company's generation is nearly fully hedged for 2026, with 94% hedged for 2027 and 72% for 2028, providing revenue visibility. Additionally, Vistra has repurchased approximately $6.5 billion in shares since November 2021, reducing share count by nearly 30%. Remaining buyback authorization stands at $1.2 billion, representing about 2.6% of market cap.

Market Context and Risks

The recent selloff comes without any negative operational news, suggesting it may be driven by broader market dynamics. Next week, Nvidia's earnings report and the PCE inflation data will be closely watched, as they could influence AI-related valuations and interest rate expectations. The Jackson Hole symposium, featuring Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, may also impact yields and, consequently, power stocks.

Peers like NextEra Energy, Southern Co., and American Electric Power also declined on Friday, though Vistra's drop was more pronounced due to its higher exposure to merchant power and data center demand. Risks to Vistra's outlook include fluctuations in power prices, severe weather, plant outages, and hedge mark-to-market adjustments. The integration of Cogentrix and large-load contract exposure also introduce execution risk.

While falling interest rates could bolster valuations, a renewed rise in yields could offset strong operational performance. Investors will be closely monitoring upcoming catalysts to gauge whether the recent pullback represents a buying opportunity or a harbinger of further downside.
