XRP, the digital asset associated with the Ripple network, experienced a sharp 10.0% rally on Thursday, reaching $1.4641 by 12:31 EDT. The move, accompanied by $3.91 billion in trading volume, led a broad uptick across major cryptocurrencies, with Solana, bitcoin, and ether posting gains of 5.5%, 4.9%, and 4.7%, respectively, over the same period.
The surge was not merely a market-wide phenomenon; XRP-specific catalysts were at play. Data from CoinDesk indicates that U.S. spot XRP exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded their eleventh consecutive day of net inflows on Tuesday, adding $14.38 million. This streak has brought cumulative inflows to approximately $170 million, lifting total net inflows since the funds' inception in November to roughly $1.68 billion.
More telling than the raw inflow figures is the evolving composition of XRP exposure. According to CoinGlass and CFTC data analyzed by CoinDesk, total XRP futures open interest declined by 16% between August 17 and August 31, falling to 2.34 billion tokens from 2.77 billion. In contrast, CME Group's XRP futures open interest surged by 36% to 387 million tokens, increasing its share of the total from 10% to 17% in just two weeks.
This divergence suggests a strategic repositioning by institutional investors. While overall leverage in the XRP market has contracted, participation in regulated, CME-listed futures has expanded. This shift may reflect a preference for venues with clearer regulatory oversight, particularly as the broader crypto market navigates an evolving regulatory landscape.
However, positioning data from the CFTC reveals a nuanced picture. As of August 25, leveraged funds held 892 long contracts and 3,206 short contracts on CME, resulting in a net short position equivalent to approximately 116 million XRP. Some of these short positions may serve as hedges against spot holdings, complicating a purely bearish interpretation.
Supply dynamics remain a supporting factor. With roughly 62.74 billion XRP in circulation out of a maximum supply of 100 billion, the asset's market capitalization stood near $91.1 billion at 12:20 EDT, according to CoinGecko. The finite supply cap adds a layer of scarcity that could underpin prices if demand persists.
Looking ahead, the next major test for XRP and the broader crypto market comes Friday, when the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the August employment report at 08:30 EDT. A stronger-than-expected jobs number could raise expectations for higher interest rates, potentially pressuring risk assets like cryptocurrencies.
Investors should monitor two key indicators to gauge the sustainability of this rally: whether spot ETF inflows continue and whether CME maintains its expanded share of futures exposure. Both metrics will offer insight into whether institutional demand for XRP is durable or merely a temporary shift in trading venues.
