Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) saw its shares climb nearly 4% on Friday, adding roughly $110 billion to its market capitalization, following a major announcement from its cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services (AWS), regarding a significant expansion of its artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The stock closed at $266.43, up 3.97%, after trading in a range of $257.78 to $267.56. The surge added about $109.8 billion in market value, a figure that underscores the market's enthusiasm for AWS's growth prospects. Volume reached 49.3 million shares, nearly matching the stock's recent daily average. In after-hours trading, shares dipped slightly to $266.31.

Massive GPU Expansion

AWS and Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ: NVDA) revealed plans to deploy two million additional graphics processing units (GPUs) across AWS's global infrastructure during 2027 and 2028. This comes on top of the more than one million GPUs AWS had already planned to add starting this year, signaling an aggressive scale-up in AI compute capacity.

The expanded fleet will include Nvidia's latest processors, including the Blackwell Ultra, Rubin, and Rubin Ultra models. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang commented that "demand is running ahead of every forecast," highlighting the robust appetite for AI computing power.

The partnership extends beyond raw accelerator capacity. AWS also plans to establish secure infrastructure containing 100,000 GPUs specifically for U.S. federal and national-security workloads, a move that could open new government contracting opportunities.

Operational Efficiencies and Performance

AWS also disclosed notable efficiency gains from its new services. The EC2 G7 instances deliver 4.6 times the AI inference performance of the previous G6 generation. Additionally, GPU vector indexing can now run nine times faster at a quarter of the cost, making AI workloads more cost-effective for customers.

These improvements are already reflecting in AWS's financial performance. In the second quarter, AWS sales surged 37% year-over-year to $42.2 billion, marking the fastest growth in 18 quarters. Segment operating income jumped 63% to $16.6 billion, providing ample funds to support the massive infrastructure expansion.

Investment Costs and Cash Flow

The expansion, however, comes with a hefty price tag. Companywide property and equipment purchases increased by $66.1 billion over the trailing twelve months. As a result, Amazon's free cash flow swung from a positive $18.2 billion to a negative $7.6 billion outflow, reflecting the accelerated pace of AI-related capital expenditures.

The central question for investors is whether the two million new GPUs will generate sufficient returns. While the capacity creates revenue potential, it only materializes when customers rent the compute at attractive rates. Amazon has not disclosed the purchase costs, power requirements, or expected returns on this investment.

Market Reaction and Analyst Views

Analyst price targets frame the valuation debate. The displayed average target is $327, implying about 22.7% upside from Friday's close. The range of targets stretches from $230 to $405. Notably, UBS maintains a Buy rating with a $318 target.

Risks remain, including potential GPU supply shortages, data-center power constraints, and construction delays that could inflate costs. Additionally, heavy reliance on Nvidia as a supplier may pressure margins, while competitors like Microsoft and Google continue to expand their own cloud AI offerings.

Friday's rally carried a demanding message: investors are rewarding AWS's scale and ambition, but the next proof point will be cash generation from this massive capacity. The coming years will reveal whether the investment translates into sustained profitability or becomes a financial burden.
