In August, Binance emerged as the dominant force in cryptocurrency exchange flows, capturing more than 75% of all centralized exchange inflows. The platform attracted $15.7 billion during the month, a figure that dwarfs its nearest competitors, according to data from Binance Research and ChainCatcher.
This concentration comes as Bitcoin experienced its most rapid monthly advance since 2024, surging roughly 25% in August. However, the digital asset has since retreated, trading at $77,472.76 as of 04:05 UTC on September 2, marking a 1.55% decline over the past 24 hours and slipping below the $78,000 threshold.
Record Trading Volumes
Binance's average daily spot trading volume soared to $13.69 billion during the August breakout, a 188% increase from $4.75 billion in the prior period. The exchange now accounts for 46% of monitored spot volume among major platforms, with OKX following at 11%.
Inflows to Binance were approximately 8.4 times greater than the next largest positive inflow, underscoring its market dominance. Bybit and OKX trailed as the next most active platforms, while flows to smaller exchanges were more fragmented.
Capital Inflows and Custody Risks
The rally attracted significant spot buying rather than leveraged speculation. Average daily spot trading volume increased 153% during the breakout, while perpetual contract volume rose 109%. Open interest in Bitcoin terms decreased by 8.5%, indicating a preference for direct ownership.
Binance added $2.63 billion to its Bitcoin holdings during the period, while OKX saw balances rise by $1.27 billion. For context, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted $3.05 billion in net inflows, providing a benchmark from listed markets.
This concentration of activity on a single venue raises concerns about custody and operational risk. Binance reported 658,293.119 BTC in platform assets on August 1, against user holdings of 656,644.187 BTC, yielding a published reserve ratio of 100.2511%.
Market Outlook and Key Levels
Wintermute trader Jasper De Maere noted that "under-allocated investors are providing price support here," highlighting $75,000 and $82,000 as critical levels to watch. The upcoming U.S. jobs report on Friday could test this range, with economists forecasting 55,000 new jobs and unemployment at 4.1%.
A stronger-than-expected labor report could heighten expectations for rate hikes ahead of the Federal Reserve's September 16 decision, potentially impacting risk assets like Bitcoin.
Reserve Transparency and Risks
Binance maintains that customer holdings are fully backed on a one-to-one basis, employing Merkle trees and zk-SNARK proofs for verification. The company also reports a debt-free capital structure.
However, proof-of-reserves represents a point-in-time snapshot and does not confirm the absence of off-chain liabilities or guarantee withdrawal liquidity. As Bitcoin's decline tests recent support levels, investors should monitor whether spot trading continues to outpace perpetual volume and whether balances remain clustered on major venues.
