Bitmine Immersion (NYSE: BMNR) has seen its gross asset discount shrink dramatically, with initial estimates pegging the discount at just 5% to 6% as of Saturday, down from approximately 18% a week earlier. The contraction is almost entirely attributable to a sharp decline in the price of Ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, which fell 13.5% over the period.
BMNR closed Friday at $15.79, a 4.8% drop on the day, but managed a 0.6% gain for the week. U.S. equity markets remained closed on Saturday, leaving the stock's next move to be determined when trading resumes on Monday.
Ether was trading at $1,624.95 on Saturday afternoon, down from Bitmine's benchmark of $1,879 set the previous Sunday. The token's continued volatility directly impacts the company's asset base, as Ether constitutes the vast majority of its holdings.
Asset Valuation Update
Bitmine reported gross assets of $11.5 billion as of July 19. After adjusting for current market prices, that figure is now closer to $10.03 billion, a decrease driven primarily by the drop in Ether's value. The company's cash holdings are estimated at $385 million, while the assessed value of Beast Industries remains unchanged at $180 million. Eightco Holdings (NASDAQ: ORBS) is still valued based on its Friday close of $0.6038.
The total asset markdown has narrowed from 17.7%-18.4% on the prior weekend basis to just 5.0%-5.9% currently. After accounting for priority claims, the common markdown has shrunk from 14.9%-15.7% to a mere 1.3%-2.2%.
Share Buyback and Capital Allocation
Bitmine repurchased 5.5 million common shares for approximately $85.9 million, at an average price of $15.6156 per share. Chairman Thomas "Tom" Lee commented, "We view the purchase of our common shares as accretive to shareholder value." The stock closed on Friday 1.1% higher than the average price paid during the buyback, suggesting the market has validated the move.
The company also acquired 7,430 Ether during the week, compared to 27,801 in the previous period. This shift in capital allocation—from Ether purchases to share buybacks—has become increasingly significant as the discount narrows.
Upcoming Catalysts
Two major events are set to impact crypto and broader markets in the coming week. The Federal Reserve will hold its meeting on July 28-29, with its policy statement scheduled for release on Wednesday. On Thursday at 08:30 EDT, second-quarter GDP figures and June personal-income statistics are due. These data points could influence investor sentiment and Ether's price trajectory.
Investors are also expected to monitor Bitmine's upcoming holdings update. The previous disclosure specifically linked reduced Ether purchases to the share buyback, highlighting the trade-off between asset accumulation and capital return.
Risks and Considerations
Ether may experience significant volatility before the stock market opens Monday. Approximately 85% of Bitmine's Ether was staked as of July 19, making those holdings less liquid. Subsequent acquisitions or offerings could alter the current estimate. Additionally, preferred shareholders hold priority over common shareholders, with 3.5 million preferred shares each carrying a minimum $100 liquidation preference.
Monday will test more than just Ether's price. The key question is whether BMNR continues to behave like a treasury stock while priced below its net asset value. Early figures from Saturday indicate that the discount has nearly disappeared, which could signal a shift in market dynamics.
