In a strategic move to strengthen its private markets offerings, Bloomberg has announced an agreement to acquire Canoe Intelligence, a firm specializing in AI-driven data processing for alternative investments. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
Deal Details and Strategic Rationale
Canoe Intelligence processes over 1.5 million documents each month, covering more than 44,000 funds. This represents approximately 88% of Bloomberg’s own monitored fund count of over 50,000 private funds. The acquisition aims to integrate Canoe’s workflow automation into Bloomberg’s existing platform, enhancing data management for clients.
According to Bloomberg, Canoe transforms unstructured fund documents into organized data, including cash flows, positions, and holdings. This capability will be integrated with Bloomberg’s PORT Enterprise platform, which serves over 800 clients. The integration has been in trial since April, using FIGI identifiers to reduce manual data mapping.
Market Context and Comparisons
Bloomberg is following a trend in the financial data space. BlackRock’s acquisition of Preqin for approximately $3.2 billion in March 2025 set a valuation benchmark. Preqin covers around 210,000 funds, far more than Canoe’s 44,000, but the two firms measure funds differently—Preqin provides broad market data, while Canoe focuses on permissioned fund records.
BlackRock shares were up 0.3% at the time of the announcement, offering little market signal regarding Bloomberg’s private deal.
Client and Technology Impact
Lupita Breland, a manager at the Arizona State Retirement System, praised the integration, stating it had “eliminated hours of operational work.” Bloomberg plans to expand the data’s use into portfolio risk, cash management, and holdings analysis, as well as fund screening and benchmarking.
The integrated data will also support ASKB, Bloomberg’s conversational AI platform. CEO Vlad Kliatchko noted that “private markets are primed to undergo a similar transformation” as public markets have seen with AI and automation.
Financial Considerations and Risks
Bloomberg has not revealed the acquisition price, Canoe’s revenue, or the expected closing date, which is subject to regulatory approval. Investors face uncertainty regarding return on investment due to undisclosed terms.
Key risks include potential data overlap, the accuracy of AI extraction, and the need for client permissions to fully integrate Canoe’s data. While the strategic rationale is clear—unifying intake, identifiers, analytics, and AI—the financial benefits remain unquantified.
The acquisition underscores Bloomberg’s commitment to expanding its private markets data capabilities, positioning it to compete with other data giants in the alternative investment space.
