Bank of America Corporation has taken a leading role in financing a massive $16 billion data center campus in Saline Township, Michigan, tied to Oracle and developed by Related Digital. The deal underscores the accelerating pace of artificial intelligence infrastructure investment and Wall Street's growing involvement in funding these capital-intensive projects.
The bank served as structuring agent and financial advisor for the financing package, which included $14 billion in bonds sold to investors. Blackstone contributed $2 billion in equity, while PIMCO purchased approximately $10 billion of the fixed-rate bonds, according to reports from Bloomberg and Reuters. The fixed-rate structure ensures interest payments remain locked in, shielding the project from short-term rate fluctuations.
Wall Street's AI Bet
Bank of America joins a crowded field of financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo, that are competing to underwrite AI-related infrastructure deals. These projects offer higher advisory fees and bond underwriting revenue but also carry significant risks related to energy consumption, environmental permitting, and local opposition.
Jim DeMare, co-president at Bank of America, cited "strong investor demand" for digital infrastructure as a key factor enabling the bank to arrange complex transactions. Jeff T. Blau, CEO of Related Companies and chairman of Related Digital, confirmed that "major construction is well underway" at the Saline Township site.
Financial Performance Context
The mandate comes on the heels of a strong first quarter for Bank of America. For the period ending March 31, 2026, the bank reported revenue of $30.3 billion, net income of $8.6 billion, and diluted earnings per share of $1.11. Investment banking fees rose 21% year-over-year to $1.8 billion, while equities trading hit a new record. CEO Brian Moynihan described client activity as healthy but noted the bank remains "watchful" about potential risks.
Bank of America shares closed at $52.05 on Friday, down 42 cents, giving the bank a market capitalization near $397 billion. Other major banks, including JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, and Wells Fargo, also declined in the session.
Environmental and Community Pushback
The project faces significant hurdles. Local critics have raised concerns about electricity consumption, environmental impact, and a lack of transparency. The facility is expected to draw over a gigawatt of power, roughly a quarter of DTE Energy's current peak capacity. DTE's approval to supply electricity is still pending, with Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel appealing the decision.
Environmental permitting remains contentious. State permits have authorized the destruction of approximately 9 acres of wetlands and the installation of 15 diesel backup generators, according to Planet Detroit. Related Digital has stated it will use a closed-loop cooling system and preserve open space, farmland, and wetlands.
Outlook and Risks
Bank of America is capitalizing on the AI buildout by earning advisory fees, distributing bonds, and strengthening relationships with sponsors and technology clients. However, the sustainability of such large-scale projects hinges on resolving power constraints, community opposition, and concerns about AI-driven debt accumulation. As Wall Street deepens its bet on AI infrastructure, the ability to navigate these challenges will be critical.
