Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN) saw its shares climb 4.28% on Tuesday, closing at $187.16, as the crypto exchange's layer-2 network Base introduced a tokenized stock offering. The move added an estimated $2.03 billion to Coinbase's market capitalization, based on 263.84 million shares outstanding.
The launch, announced on August 25, 2026, marks a significant step for Base, which now offers four tokenized U.S. equities to eligible non-U.S. users. Each token is backed one-for-one by shares held with a regulated custodian, allowing for 24/7 trading in eligible jurisdictions. The initial lineup includes Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META), Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), and Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL).
This initiative transforms traditional securities into blockchain-based assets that can be used as collateral in decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols or held in self-custody wallets. Chainlink provides continuous pricing data for the tokens, ensuring price accuracy.
The market's reaction was positive, with Coinbase's stock price jumping $7.68 on volume of 10.55 million shares. The $2.03 billion increase in quoted equity value is roughly 1.66 times the company's second-quarter revenue of $1.22 billion, underscoring the significance of the announcement.
However, the scope of the launch is limited. Only four stocks are currently available, and U.S. investors are excluded under Regulation S. Coinbase has not disclosed fees, trading volumes, or revenue generated from the product, leaving its financial impact uncertain.
Coinbase's second-quarter results showed $555 million in subscription and services revenue, representing 48% of net revenue. The company reported an adjusted EBITDA of $207.8 million but posted a net loss of $359.5 million. Despite this, the stock trades at a premium valuation compared to traditional exchange peers, with a forward price-to-earnings multiple of approximately 163, versus around 20-23 for Cboe, Intercontinental Exchange, Nasdaq, and CME Group.
Analysts remain cautiously optimistic, with a consensus Buy rating and an average price target of $196.55, implying about 5% upside from Tuesday's close. The stock eased 0.26% to $186.68 in after-hours trading.
The broader crypto market rally also contributed to the stock's gains, making it difficult to isolate the impact of the tokenized stock launch. Risks include limited initial listings, exclusion of U.S. investors, and potential liquidity, custody, and legal challenges. Undisclosed fees add to the uncertainty.
Investors will watch for transaction volume and fee disclosures to gauge the product's revenue potential. Additional listings could broaden the addressable market. Until then, the $2.03 billion market value gain is a signal of market optimism rather than proof of product revenue.
