CoreWeave (NASDAQ:CRWV) shares experienced a volatile week, closing Friday at $71.88, down 11.4% on the day and 1.8% lower over the week. The decline reflected ongoing market anxiety over the AI funding gap, as traders weighed the company's capital expenditure intensity against future revenue potential.

The stock saw a dramatic intraweek swing, rising 13.1% from Monday's close through Wednesday, only to surrender those gains with a 13.0% drop in the final two sessions. This pattern highlighted the market's focus on the timing of cash flows and the sustainability of demand. Despite the weekly loss, buyer interest remained elevated, supported by funding commitments that preserved a portion of the earlier gains.

In contrast, IREN (NASDAQ:IREN) and Nebius Group (NASDAQ:NBIS) both ended the week higher. IREN closed at $37.07, down 8.7% on Friday but up 10.3% for the week, aided by a new funding structure where customer prepayments cover approximately 45% of GPU-related capital expenditure. Nebius Group finished at $187.77, falling 15.0% on Friday but gaining 5.7% week-over-week, after Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) disclosed a 9.3% stake in the company from prior funding rounds.

The broader Nasdaq Composite fell 0.6% on Friday and 2.0% for the week, pressured by technology sector concerns over AI spending. On Wednesday, Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) provided a demand update, noting that third-party compute would help address its internal capacity constraints. CoreWeave shares rose roughly 3% in after-hours trading following the news.

Alphabet reported Google Cloud revenue of $24.8 billion, an 82% increase year-over-year. The company raised its 2026 capital expenditure target to a range of $195 billion to $205 billion, while also reporting negative free cash flow of $5.9 billion. CFO Anat Ashkenazi commented, "The demand still outpaces that investment."

Peter Andersen, CEO of Andersen Capital Management, summarized the changing sentiment: "The fear of missing out is becoming more like a fear of massive overbuilding." This caution was reflected in CoreWeave's latest financials, which showed first-quarter capital expenditures of $6.786 billion against revenue of $2.078 billion—a ratio of 3.3 times revenue. The company's non-GAAP adjusted operating margin fell to 1% from 17% a year earlier, while interest costs reached $536 million, representing 25.8% of revenue. Total debt stood at approximately $24.9 billion as of March 31.

CoreWeave CEO Michael Intrator described May as "the strongest bookings quarter in CoreWeave's history," but securing capital to fulfill those orders remains a key challenge. Of the $99.4 billion backlog, only 36% is expected to be realized over the next 24 months, with the remaining 64% scheduled for later periods. The company noted that deployment costs are incurred ahead of peak revenue recognition.

Looking ahead, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) are scheduled to report earnings next Wednesday, followed by Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) on Thursday. Investors will focus on capital expenditure plans, outsourced computing arrangements, and customer prepayment structures. The outcome of these reports could shift risk onto customers, potentially outweighing demand-driven headlines.

Key risks include the fact that backlog does not represent cash, and revenue recognition depends on delivery and service access. Delays in construction, reduced utilization, or increased funding costs could further widen the gap between spending and revenue.
