CLEVELAND — IKEA is set to open a new, compact store at Crocker Park in Westlake, Ohio, in spring 2027, marking a strategic shift toward smaller-format retail as the company navigates a changing retail landscape. The 80,000-square-foot location will be significantly smaller than the company’s traditional warehouses, which typically range from 200,000 to 500,000 square feet. This represents a reduction of 60% to 84% in floor space compared to a conventional IKEA outlet.
Strategic Shift Toward Compact Formats
The new store is part of Ingka Group’s broader plan to open 20 compact outlets across Europe and North America, backed by a 5 billion euro investment over three years. Ingka CEO Juvencio Maeztu emphasized in March that “the physical store remains at the centre of our omnichannel business.” Smaller store formats reduce costs and enable quicker openings, the company said.
Rob Olson, chief operating officer for IKEA U.S., described the Westlake location as “an exciting chance to reach additional customers in Northern Ohio.” The store will feature a showroom, in-store pickup space, and takeaway inventory for online orders, with over 3,250 products and 250 pieces of furniture available for immediate purchase, and more than 5,400 items offered for online pickup.
E-Commerce and Sales Trends
IKEA’s U.S. e-commerce sales remained steady at $1.9 billion in FY25, unchanged from FY24. However, overall U.S. sales declined to $5.3 billion from $5.5 billion, a drop of approximately 3.6%. The e-commerce mix increased to about 35.8% from 34.5%, highlighting the growing importance of online sales and pickup capacity.
According to early Census data, furniture and home-furnishings store sales reached a seasonally adjusted $11.323 billion in June, holding steady compared to May levels. The broader home-furnishings market showed mixed performance among public companies: Wayfair (NYSE:W) was down 0.9% at $93.71, while Williams-Sonoma (NYSE:WSM) climbed 2.3% and RH (NYSE:RH) advanced 1.0%.
Market Context and Risks
The compact store format is a departure from IKEA’s traditional warehouse model, which has been a hallmark of the brand. The nearest full-size IKEA stores are currently in Columbus, Pittsburgh, and Detroit. The Westlake opening will be IKEA’s third location in Ohio.
Risks include the possibility that the smaller store format may disappoint customers expecting the full warehouse selection. Ingka has acknowledged the need to manage expectations clearly. The primary challenge is productivity: the Westlake store must generate higher pickup, planning, and repeat visits from a smaller footprint.
Spring 2027 remains a target rather than a confirmed launch date. The store will occupy a space previously held by a DICK’s Sporting Goods store, which was 50,000 square feet and has been expanded by 60%.
