Indiana communities are gearing up for a series of Independence Day running events that will pay tribute to military service members and veterans, as the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026.
Crooked Lake Freedom 5 in Angola
The Crooked Lake Freedom 5, scheduled for July 4 in Angola, Indiana, will feature a 5-mile race starting at 8:00 a.m. EDT, followed by a 5K run/walk at 8:20 a.m. EDT. Entry fees are set at $45 for each race. Organizers are offering a $5 discount for active-duty military, veterans, and current and retired first responders, signaling a focus on community participation rather than elite competition.
Proceeds from the event will support efforts to preserve the natural beauty and integrity of Crooked Lake. Registration closes late on July 2 and reopens on July 3, with packet pickup and onsite registration available that evening at the 4-H park pavilion near the course start and finish.
Honor Flight Freedom Run at Bosse Field
In southern Indiana, Honor Flight of Southern Indiana will host its inaugural Freedom Run at Historic Bosse Field in Evansville on July 4. The event kicks off at 8:00 a.m. CDT and includes a 5K run/walk, a one-mile walk, and a kids dash at 9:00 a.m. CDT. Both the start and finish are at home plate, with the kids dash taking participants around the bases for a festive, non-traditional road race experience.
Veterans in wheelchairs are encouraged to join, organizers said. Honor Flight of Southern Indiana, recognized as the 133rd hub by the Honor Flight Network, covers 14 counties in the state. Since 2014, the group has flown 1,480 veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit memorials dedicated to their service.
Community Focus and 250th Anniversary
The runs are part of broader civic celebrations tied to the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding. Organizers in Angola and Evansville are emphasizing simplicity and accessibility, aiming for events that families and holiday visitors can attend before fireworks displays. The morning runs and veterans salutes are designed to provide a direct reason for community members to gather on Independence Day.
“The July 4, 2026 date is a big one for organizers, marking 250 years since the founding of the country,” according to race listings. “They’re linking runs, walks, and stadium events to civic celebrations and fundraisers, hoping to draw in the community.”

Additional runs are scheduled around the same date, including the Hamilton Lake Road Classic on July 4, located roughly nine miles from Angola. The Crooked Lake event is listed on Endurance Grid’s schedule, offering both 5K and 5-mile distances.
Turnout remains uncertain, as the events compete for participants, volunteers, sponsors, and family time on the holiday. Organizers in Angola noted that late registrations may only be accepted via cash or check, potentially slowing last-minute sign-ups.
As the nation prepares for its semiquincentennial, these runs aim to honor those who have served while bringing communities together for a morning of patriotism and remembrance.
