IonQ Inc. (NYSE:IONQ) saw its shares climb 8.9% to $43.49 in Thursday's premarket trading, following the release of record second-quarter results and an upward revision to its full-year revenue guidance. The move comes after the stock closed Wednesday down 4.3% at $39.93.

The new guidance midpoint of $285 million implies second-half revenue of $140.3 million, which is 3.1% below the $144.7 million generated in the first half of the year. This effectively lowers the bar for the remainder of 2026, shifting investor focus from top-line growth to margin expansion, cash burn, and integration of the recently completed SkyWater acquisition.

Revenue for the quarter reached $80.1 million, a 287% surge year-over-year and roughly 20% above Wall Street's $66.5 million estimate. Chief Executive Niccolo de Masi described the quarter as the "strongest" in IonQ's history, highlighting robust demand across commercial and international customers.

Key Financial Metrics

  • Revenue: $80.1 million vs. $66.5 million expected
  • Adjusted EPS: -$0.33 vs. -$0.56 expected
  • Adjusted EBITDA: -$120.3 million, wider than -$36.5 million in Q2 2025
  • GAAP net loss: -$1.868 billion, including a $1.65 billion warrant-liability charge
  • Cash and investments: $3.0 billion pre-SkyWater; $2.0 billion pro forma

The GAAP loss includes a non-cash fair-value adjustment of $1.65 billion related to warrant liabilities. Adjusted EBITDA also includes $24.7 million in SkyWater-related research spending; excluding that, the adjusted loss would have been $95.6 million.

Revenue Growth vs. Cost Pressures

While revenue grew 287%, cost of revenue (excluding depreciation and amortization) soared 622% to $60.1 million, compressing the gross-margin proxy to 24.9% from 59.8% a year earlier. Research and development expenses rose 55% to $160.6 million, and general and administrative costs jumped 144% to $117.6 million. Operating cash use in the first half totaled $254.8 million, nearly triple the prior year's $85.6 million.

These figures underscore the challenge facing IonQ: rapid scaling comes with significant cost pressure, and the market will be watching whether the company can convert its revenue momentum into improving margins.

Guidance and Outlook

IonQ raised its 2026 revenue forecast to $280 million–$290 million, up from the previous range of $260 million–$270 million and well above the initial $225 million–$245 million. The updated guidance excludes any contribution from the SkyWater acquisition, which closed on July 31 for $1.8 billion. The company estimates post-deal cash and investments at approximately $2 billion.

Even at the high end of the range, second-half revenue would only need to be $145.3 million, just 0.4% above the first half. The low end requires $135.3 million, 6.5% less. This suggests that IonQ's growth trajectory may be flattening, but the lower hurdle gives management room to focus on profitability and integration.

Government Contracts and Analyst Actions

IonQ also announced two U.S. government awards Thursday. DARPA extended an atomic-clock contract by $28 million for 125 units, with IonQ committing $15 million to production capacity. Additionally, its Capella division won an NRO radar-data contract, though the value was not disclosed.

Jefferies maintained a Buy rating but cut its price target to $75 from $85, citing the strong report and pointing to September's analyst day as a key catalyst. Other recent actions include Wedbush initiating with Outperform and a $75 target, and Benchmark starting coverage with Buy and a $60 target. The average analyst target among 14 tracked analysts is $70.71, with a range of $35–$100.

Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ:RGTI) is set to report its second-quarter results after Thursday's close, providing another data point for the quantum sector.

Risks and Considerations

Key risks include continued margin compression, widening losses, and heavy cash consumption. The SkyWater acquisition reduces near-term liquidity and adds integration risk. Additionally, remaining performance obligations include unfunded contract portions, which could affect future revenue recognition.

The premarket rally reflects optimism about demand, but sustaining gains will require evidence that IonQ can improve margins and manage costs effectively, not just deliver another revenue beat.
