Lucid Group (NASDAQ:LCID) saw its shares give back early gains on Tuesday, closing the regular session at $7.78, up 1.0%, before sliding about 7.5% in after-hours trading to around $7.20. The decline followed the electric-vehicle maker's second-quarter earnings report, which revealed a wider-than-expected loss and a delay in the rollout of its more affordable midsize platform.

The company announced a cash improvement plan targeting $1.4 billion in savings, a figure that represents 94.8% of its second-quarter free cash outflow of $1.476 billion. The plan focuses primarily on inventory reduction and capital expenditure cuts, with only about $200 million coming from operating expense reductions. While this could extend Lucid's financial runway, it does not directly address the underlying vehicle economics that have kept gross margins deeply negative.

Q2 2026 Financial Highlights

Lucid delivered 3,953 vehicles in the second quarter, up 19.5% year-over-year, while revenue surged 56.2% to $405.3 million. However, cost of revenue grew at a similar pace, rising 56.5% to $832.1 million, leaving the computed gross margin at -105.3%, nearly unchanged from -105.0% a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA loss widened to -$901.1 million, a 42.6% increase from the prior year's -$632.1 million. Free cash flow outflow also expanded significantly to -$1.476 billion from -$1.013 billion.

The company attributed part of the wider loss to $299 million in inventory and purchase-commitment write-downs. CEO Silvio Napoli acknowledged execution gaps, stating that while Lucid possesses advanced technology, "potential is not performance." He emphasized a renewed focus on cash, customers, and internal accountability.

Cash Improvement Plan Details

The $1.4 billion target is broken down as follows: $600 million to $800 million from inventory reductions (43%-57% of the total), approximately $500 million from capital expenditure cuts (36%), and about $200 million from operating expense reductions (14%). Inventory stood at $1.379 billion as of June 30, up 24% from December, so the planned reduction represents roughly 44% to 58% of that balance.

Lucid has already slowed production. In Q2, it manufactured 4,774 vehicles versus 3,953 delivered, reducing excess production to 821 units from 2,407 in Q1. The company did not issue a new full-year production target, but Napoli expects lower production in the second half while deliveries improve sequentially.

Comparison with Rivian

Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ:RIVN) serves as the closest public peer, though comparisons are imprecise due to Rivian's software and services revenue. In Q2, Rivian delivered 12,194 vehicles, generated $1.658 billion in revenue, and posted a positive gross profit of $179 million (10.8% margin), including $215 million from software and services. Rivian's automotive division still posted a gross loss of $36 million. Free cash flow was -$849 million, and quarter-end liquidity stood at $5.846 billion, versus Lucid's $3.0 billion.

Market Outlook

The market's full reaction will come during Wednesday's regular session. Investors must weigh the benefit of a larger liquidity buffer against narrower margins and a delayed volume ramp. The midsize model launch has been pushed to the second half of 2027, a decision Napoli said was aimed at avoiding "repeat the mistakes of the past" after rushed rollouts of the Air and Gravity.

Risks remain, including supply chain disruptions, softer demand for premium EVs, slower inventory turnover, and further launch delays. Lucid continues to rely on financing and disciplined execution to maintain its projected runway through 2027. The extension provides time, but the company must use it to reduce gross losses and stem ongoing cash outflows.
