Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) saw its shares tumble 4.4% in premarket trading on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, reversing the previous session's advance. The stock was quoted at $967, down $44.75 from Monday's close of $1,011.75. This decline erased the entire 4.13% gain from Monday, which had added $40.09 per share, and pushed the price 0.5% below Friday's closing level of $971.66.

The selloff was triggered by a sharp rise in long-term Treasury yields, with the 30-year yield reaching its highest point since 2007. Higher discount rates typically pressure high-growth technology stocks, and memory makers, which are sensitive to interest rate expectations, felt the brunt. The move trimmed approximately $50 billion from Micron's market capitalization, which stood at $1.14 trillion as of Monday—a figure nearly double the company's most recent quarterly operating cash flow of $25.39 billion.

Memory Sector Under Pressure

The weakness extended across the storage sector. SanDisk Corp. (NASDAQ: SNDK) declined 4.7% before the bell, Western Digital Corp. (NASDAQ: WDC) slipped 5.7%, and Seagate Technology Holdings plc (NASDAQ: STX) was down 5.9%. This pullback came after five consecutive sessions of gains for memory stocks, during which SanDisk surged 8.88% on Monday, Western Digital climbed 5.35%, and Seagate added 2.19%.

Despite the recent rally, Tuesday's premarket action left SanDisk still up 3.75% from Friday's close, while Western Digital was down 0.62% and Seagate was down 3.79% over the same period. The divergence highlights the market's shifting sentiment as yields rise.

Strong Fundamentals vs. Higher Discount Rates

The reversal is notable because the memory industry's fundamentals remain robust. Micron reported fiscal third-quarter revenue of $41.46 billion, a 346% increase year-over-year, with GAAP gross margin expanding to 84.6% from 37.7% a year earlier. Operating cash flow reached $25.39 billion, and adjusted free cash flow was $18.30 billion. For the fiscal fourth quarter, the company projects revenue of $50 billion (plus or minus $1 billion), with a GAAP gross margin of approximately 86% and earnings per share of $30.73.

CEO Sanjay Mehrotra has emphasized that multi-year customer contracts could enhance the durability of earnings, potentially reducing the sector's historical boom-bust cycles. Analysts have taken note, with firms like Bank of America, UBS, and Mizuho maintaining buy ratings and price targets ranging from $1,150 to $1,750, implying significant upside from Tuesday's premarket price.

Market Context and Risks

The rise in Treasury yields is a key risk factor. With a beta of 2.18, Micron is highly sensitive to interest rate movements, making its valuation multiple vulnerable to further yield increases. Additionally, any slowdown in data center demand or accelerated supply expansion could pressure memory pricing. The stock's 254% gain in 2026 also leaves little room for disappointment in forward guidance.

Investors will be watching the Federal Reserve's minutes, due Wednesday, for clues on the central bank's policy path. Nvidia's (NASDAQ: NVDA) upcoming earnings next week will also provide fresh insights into AI infrastructure demand, a critical driver for memory chips.

In the broader market, the tech-heavy Nasdaq was trading flat in New York on Monday, with breadth declining 1.5-to-1, though AI hardware stocks outperformed. The premarket declines in memory names suggest a cautious start for the sector as yields remain elevated.
