Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) shares continued their downward trajectory on Monday, falling 0.5% to $2.08 in late morning trading, as persistent cash flow challenges overshadowed the company's recent $80 million liquidity injection from asset sales. The stock is now trading roughly 8% below Tuesday's closing price and has declined about 55% from its October 2025 high of $4.58, marking a prolonged bearish trend.
Cash Burn Accelerates Despite Margin Improvement
The fuel-cell company's first-quarter results revealed a mixed picture. While revenue grew 22% year-over-year to $163.5 million and GAAP gross margin improved significantly to negative 13% from negative 55% a year earlier, operating cash consumption rose by 42% to $150 million, compared to $105.6 million in the same period last year. This increase in cash burn, despite margin gains, has heightened investor concerns about the company's path to self-sustaining profitability.
The company's unrestricted cash stood at approximately $162 million as of June 30, preliminary and unaudited, not including proceeds from previously announced transactions. Plug Power forecasts near-term liquidity above $80 million, which would bring the total to about $242 million, roughly 1.6 times the first-quarter operating cash usage. However, this figure is based on a run-rate calculation, not a forward projection.
Asset Sales Provide Temporary Relief
Plug Power is pursuing asset disposals to bolster its balance sheet. The sale of its Graham, Texas facility is expected to close by the end of July, with a $50 million payment at closing and an additional $26.5 million contingent on load capacity validation. The deal may also release approximately $14 million in cash collateral, potentially boosting total liquidity to as much as $90.5 million. Separately, a New York asset sale is set at a fixed purchase price of $142 million, with the final non-land closing possible by March 31, 2027.
The broader liquidity plan, totaling more than $275 million, represents roughly 1.8 times the cash used in the first quarter. While these asset sales extend the company's funding runway, they do not directly reduce the core operating cash burn, which remains a critical concern for investors.
Dilution Worries Intensify
The weighted-average shares outstanding rose by nearly 50% to 1.390 billion, exacerbating dilution fears. Adjusted loss per share narrowed to 8 cents from 17 cents, but the increased share count underscores ongoing financing needs. Analysts project a second-quarter per-share loss of 8 cents, improving from a 9-cent loss forecast three months earlier. However, the full-year loss forecast widened to 35 cents from 31 cents, reflecting persistent challenges.
CEO José Luis Crespo stated that Plug Power continues to prioritize margin improvement, liquidity management, and pipeline growth as its critical focus areas. The company is set to report second-quarter results on August 12.
Market Context and Analyst Views
Fuel-cell stocks traded mixed on Monday. Bloom Energy Corp. (NYSE:BE) slipped 1.2%, Ballard Power Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:BLDP) declined 1.7%, while FuelCell Energy Inc. (NASDAQ:FCEL) added 0.4%. Plug Power's stock holds a consensus rating of Hold, with analyst price targets ranging from $0.75 to $7, reflecting divergent views on execution and financing risks.
Key risks include delays in asset closures, fluctuations in hydrogen expenses, policy changes, variability in customer demand, and capital constraints. A further rerating will likely depend on reduced cash burn and more gradual dilution. Delivering another revenue beat without improved cash conversion could keep the funding discussion open, potentially weighing on the stock further.
