SoFi Technologies (NASDAQ:SOFI) shares rallied 12.7% last week, closing Friday at $18.38, as investors cheered the company's second-quarter results. However, the advance has pushed the stock above the median analyst price target, and the company's own guidance implies a significant acceleration in profitability during the second half of the year—a feat that may prove challenging.

The fintech firm's adjusted EBITDA margin is projected to expand to between 35.3% and 36.7% in the second half, up from 30.4% in the first half, according to initial estimates derived from the company's full-year outlook. This implies a 29.3% sequential increase in adjusted EBITDA to approximately $902.3 million, while adjusted net revenue is only expected to rise 7.2% to 11.5% to a range of $2.457 billion to $2.557 billion. Adjusted EPS is forecast to jump 50% to $0.36, from $0.24 in the first half.

The second-quarter results were robust, with adjusted revenue climbing 40% year-over-year to $1.21 billion and adjusted EBITDA up 44% to $357.8 million. CEO Anthony Noto attributed the performance to strong consumer spending and credit metrics, which continue to meet or exceed expectations. However, the business mix remains skewed toward lending, which contributed the majority of growth and profit.

Lending segment revenue surged 59% to $711.7 million, with a contribution margin of 56%. Financial Services revenue grew 29% to $466.3 million, but its contribution margin slipped to 46% from 52% a year earlier. Technology Platform revenue fell 23% to $84.5 million, and its contribution margin dropped sharply to 14% from 30%. This uneven performance underscores the company's reliance on lending for margin expansion.

Funding costs have provided some relief, with deposits increasing by $5.3 billion during the quarter to $45.5 billion, resulting in $712.6 million in annualized interest expense savings. Credit quality also improved, with the annualized charge-off rate for personal loans falling to 2.62% from 2.83% a year earlier. However, personal-loan originations reached an all-time high of $10.7 billion, increasing exposure to potential consumer credit deterioration.

The rally in SoFi shares was part of a broader fintech rebound, with Upstart Holdings (NASDAQ:UPST) gaining 13.3% and Affirm Holdings (NASDAQ:AFRM) rising 5.2% over the same period. This suggests the move was not solely driven by SoFi-specific fundamentals but also by renewed investor appetite for the sector.

Despite the positive momentum, analyst sentiment remains cautious. The consensus rating is Hold, with 8 buy or overweight recommendations, 13 holds, and 5 underweight or sell ratings. The average price target stands at $19.58, implying a modest 6.5% upside, while the median target of $18.00 is below the current market price. The wide range of targets, from $12 to $30, highlights significant disagreement about SoFi's earnings potential.

Looking ahead, markets will reopen on Monday, August 10, and key economic data releases later in the week could influence interest rate expectations and consumer loan demand. The July consumer price index is due Wednesday, followed by producer prices on Thursday and retail sales on Friday. These reports will be closely watched for their impact on funding costs and credit conditions.

SoFi faces several risks, including potential deterioration in consumer credit, continued weakness in its Technology Platform segment, and interest rate volatility. The company's need to deliver significant margin improvement in the second half leaves little room for execution missteps. As the stock trades above analyst targets, investors will be looking for evidence that the record revenue can translate into substantially stronger profit growth.
