Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI) delivered a blockbuster fiscal 2026, with revenue nearly doubling year over year. However, the company's annual filing also revealed two persistent challenges that are giving investors pause: thinning gross margins and an incomplete financial control remediation process.

For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2026, Super Micro reported net sales of $39.06 billion, a 77.8% jump from the prior year. That explosive growth was driven by robust demand for its AI server platforms. Yet the company's gross margin contracted to 10.8% from 11.1% in fiscal 2025, meaning each dollar of sales generated just 10.8 cents of gross profit. The margin compression underscores the intense competitive pricing environment and rising component costs that have accompanied the AI infrastructure boom.

The market's reaction was muted. Super Micro shares closed the regular session at $36.71, down 1.5% (or 57 cents) from Monday's close, on volume of 26.4 million shares. In after-hours trading, the stock rebounded to $37.18, recovering about 47 cents. The tepid response suggests investors are weighing the company's strong top-line momentum against the lingering risks outlined in its Form 10-K, filed August 31, 2026.

Controls and Concentration Risks

The 10-K included a sobering assessment of internal controls. Management determined that the company's financial-reporting controls were not effective as of June 30, 2026. While three previously identified material weaknesses have been resolved, one information technology general control weakness remains. Specifically, IT access controls were not in place for a sufficient period to allow for operating effectiveness testing. The company's auditor, BDO, issued an adverse conclusion on the effectiveness of internal controls, though it noted that this does not affect its opinion on the financial statements themselves.

Adding to the concern is the company's heavy concentration risk. A single supplier accounted for 63.1% of Super Micro's annual purchases, while three customers represented 52.6% of accounts receivable. This concentration could strain working capital if sales continue to accelerate, as the company may need to fund inventory and receivables from a limited set of counterparties.

Quarterly Results and Guidance

The fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 offered a brighter picture. Revenue reached $11.1 billion, and gross margin recovered to 17.5%. Operating cash flow totaled $747 million, according to the August earnings release. These figures suggest that the company's margin pressures may be easing as it scales its operations.

Looking ahead, Super Micro forecasts first-quarter fiscal 2027 sales between $14.5 billion and $15.5 billion, with the midpoint representing a 35% sequential increase. For the full year, the company guides to $65 billion to $72 billion in revenue, implying roughly 75% growth. Chief Executive Charles Liang highlighted that the company has generated more than $60 billion in new orders and maintains a record backlog. The guidance assumes these orders will convert to revenue without further margin erosion.

Analyst Sentiment and Investor Focus

Wall Street remains divided on Super Micro's prospects. Of 15 analysts tracked, six rate the stock a Buy, seven recommend Hold, and two suggest Sell. The consensus 12-month price target is $41, representing a 10.3% premium to the after-hours price of $37.18.

Key risks include potential order cancellations or delays, rising component costs, and the possibility that control remediation takes longer than expected. On the upside, an improving customer mix could drive margin expansion. Management is scheduled to address investors on September 8 and 10, where they are expected to provide further clarity on the backlog and the path to full control compliance.
