Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:SMCI) experienced a significant weekly surge, with shares climbing 24.5% following an updated preliminary margin forecast that suggests a substantial increase in profitability. The revised outlook indicates gross profit could rise by approximately $847 million compared to earlier projections, based on the midpoint of the new margin range.

On Friday, the stock closed at $30.10, down 3.5% for the day, but the weekly gain was driven largely by a 19.8% surge on Wednesday. The broader Nasdaq Composite fell 2.1% over the same period, underscoring the strength of Super Micro's move.

Margin Reset Details

The company's revised gross margin guidance of 15% to 17% implies gross profit between $1.65 billion and $1.87 billion, based on the lower end of its sales forecast of approximately $11 billion. Previously, the margin outlook of 8.2% to 8.4% had suggested gross profit of $902 million to $924 million. The new midpoint effectively adds $847 million in potential gross profit.

Revenue remains the weaker metric, with Super Micro forecasting sales near the bottom of its projected $11 billion to $12.5 billion range. Analysts surveyed by LSEG had anticipated $11.67 billion for the quarter.

Order Book Expansion

Order volume continues to grow rapidly. Fourth-quarter orders have surpassed $60 billion, representing roughly 5.4 times the expected quarterly revenue. This backlog is also nearly 2.9 times the company's market capitalization of $20.8 billion as of Friday. However, the company cautioned that some orders may not represent binding commitments and could be subject to cancellation or postponement.

Valuation and Peer Comparison

Despite the strong performance, Super Micro shares slipped on Friday, while peers showed mixed results. Dell Technologies (NYSE:DELL) fell 0.4% and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE:HPE) gained 0.2%. Super Micro's price-to-earnings ratio of 14.5x is the lowest among the group, compared to Dell's 34.9x and HPE's 43.8x. However, this discount does not necessarily imply a low valuation given the company's recent equity and debt financing plans.

Balance Sheet and Financing

In June, Super Micro announced plans for $7 billion in equity and equity-linked funding, aimed in part at purchasing parts needed to fulfill $39 billion in AI server orders. As of March 31, the company held $1.3 billion in cash against $8.8 billion in bank borrowings and convertible bonds. Operating activities consumed $6.6 billion in cash during the fiscal third quarter, highlighting the capital-intensive nature of the business.

Product Developments

Super Micro has shifted its product focus toward more compact AI systems. On Thursday, the company introduced H15 servers powered by Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) EPYC 9006 chips, including a Helios rack-scale platform that supports up to 72 GPUs. Chief business officer Vik Malyala said the new offerings aim for "high performance, rapid scalability, and peak efficiency."

Analyst Commentary

Wedbush analyst Matt Bryson attributed the margin improvement to product scarcity, which allowed Super Micro to "more favorably price products and/or shift customers to a richer mix of servers." He maintained a Neutral rating with a $34 price target.

Upcoming Earnings and Risks

Super Micro is scheduled to report full-year and fourth-quarter earnings on August 11 after market close, with a conference call at 5 p.m. ET. Investors will focus on financing disclosures, order conversion rates, and customer mix to assess the sustainability of recent margin gains. Risks include the preliminary nature of estimates, potential order cancellations, equity dilution, tariffs, and customer concentration. With sales around $11 billion, each percentage point in margin represents approximately $110 million in gross profit, making cash flow a key metric to watch.
