Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI) experienced a notable surge in its stock price on Wednesday, closing up 19.02% at $37.61. The rally came on the back of the company's fiscal 2027 revenue guidance, which significantly exceeded analyst expectations. Trading volume was robust, with approximately 164.9 million shares changing hands during the session.

The company's optimistic outlook is driven by strong demand for its AI server products. Management projected fiscal 2027 revenue in the range of $65 billion to $72 billion, with a midpoint of $68.5 billion. This represents a substantial 75.2% increase over fiscal 2026 revenue of $39.1 billion. Chief Executive Charles Liang highlighted that the company generated more than $60 billion in new orders and entered fiscal 2027 with a record backlog.

However, the excitement surrounding the revenue forecast is tempered by concerns about profitability. The company's guidance for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 indicates a significant decline in gross profit despite the anticipated revenue growth. Using the midpoint of the guidance, adjusted gross profit is projected to be approximately $1.59 billion, which is about 18.6% lower than the $1.95 billion recorded in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026.

This apparent contradiction is central to the market's reaction. While investors are optimistic about revenue growth and order conversion, they seem to view the fourth-quarter margin improvement as a one-time event. The first-quarter adjusted gross margin is forecast to be between 10.4% and 10.8%, a sharp drop from the 17.6% adjusted gross margin reported in the fourth quarter.

The company's fourth-quarter results were strong, with revenue of $11.1 billion, GAAP gross margin of 17.5%, and net income of $1.18 billion. These figures marked significant improvements over both the previous quarter and the year-ago period. The fourth-quarter performance was bolstered by a favorable customer mix and operational efficiencies.

Looking ahead, the key challenge for Super Micro will be executing at scale. Management noted that some customer delays have shifted power, cooling, and networking revenue out of the fourth quarter. If backlog conversion slows further, meeting the ambitious revenue targets could become difficult. Additionally, an unfavorable customer mix may keep margins at the lower end of guidance.

The market's broader sentiment was positive, with other AI-related stocks also gaining. CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV) rose 19.3%, and Dell Technologies (NYSE: DELL) advanced about 5%. Analysts have responded to the news with mixed ratings. Citi and Wedbush maintained Neutral ratings, while Needham and Rosenblatt reiterated Buy ratings. Price targets range from $39 to $51, implying potential gains of 3.7% to 35.6% from Wednesday's close.

Despite the surge, the consensus among analysts remains cautious. Of the 18 analysts surveyed, two rate the stock as Sell, twelve as Hold, and four as Buy. The average price target of $41.80 suggests an 11.1% upside, which is considered limited following the recent rally.

Investors will be closely watching the company's first-quarter results to see if it can deliver on both revenue growth and margin recovery. The stock's future direction may hinge more on the speed of gross-profit recovery than on revenue growth alone.
