Ulta Beauty (NASDAQ: ULTA) experienced a 1.5% decline in its share price during premarket trading on Friday, settling at $531.86, despite reporting fiscal second-quarter results that surpassed analyst expectations and raising its full-year outlook. The dip erased approximately $350 million in implied market capitalization, reflecting that investor expectations had already priced in the positive news, as the stock had climbed 5.3% over the preceding month.
The beauty retailer reported diluted earnings of $6.55 per share, comfortably exceeding the consensus estimate of $6.19 from LSEG, as cited by Reuters. Net sales for the quarter reached $3.036 billion, an increase of 8.9% year-over-year. Comparable sales grew 3.8%, a deceleration from the 6.7% growth recorded in the same period last year, but still within the company's revised guidance range.
Key Financial Metrics
- Net sales: $3.036 billion, up 8.9% from $2.789 billion
- Comparable sales: +3.8% versus +6.7% in prior year
- Gross margin: 39.1%, down 0.1 percentage point
- Operating margin: 12.5%, up 0.1 percentage point
- Diluted EPS: $6.55, up 13.3% from $5.78
Operating income rose 10.1% to $379.6 million, with the operating margin expanding slightly to 12.5%. However, gross margin contracted to 39.1% from 39.2%, a compression management attributed primarily to the mix of the Space NK business, which was acquired last year. Revenue growth was supported by contributions from Space NK and new store openings, with Ulta adding 13 net new U.S. locations during the quarter.
Raised Guidance and Share Buybacks
Management raised its full-year 2026 guidance for sales, profit, and share repurchases. The company now expects net sales growth of 6.7% to 7.2%, up from the previous range of 6% to 7%. Comparable sales growth is projected at 3.2% to 3.7%, and operating income growth is forecast at 8.3% to 9.3%. The share buyback program was increased to $1.8 billion from $1.5 billion, reflecting confidence in the company's cash flow generation. In the first half of the fiscal year, Ulta invested $791.1 million to repurchase 1.4 million shares.
The raised buyback comes alongside a more constrained balance sheet. Cash and short-term investments stood at $213.5 million, compared with $339.6 million in short-term debt. Inventory remained relatively stable at approximately $2.4 billion, which is notable given that slower comparable sales growth could increase the risk of markdowns if excess beauty stock accumulates.
Consumer Resilience and Risks
Chief Executive Kecia Steelman noted that the company observed no significant shift in consumer behavior, with higher-earning and younger customers continuing to purchase prestige products. This resilience is encouraging, but risks remain. The Space NK assortment may continue to weigh on gross margins, and increased competition from Amazon, TikTok, and specialty retailers could drive higher marketing expenses.
Investor focus has now shifted to execution. After a robust first half, the updated outlook offers minimal tolerance for slower momentum in the second half. The stock's slight decline suggests that while the earnings beat was solid, the market is looking for continued strong performance to justify the recent run-up.
Ulta Beauty's results come amid a broader retail environment where consumer spending has shown mixed signals. The company's ability to maintain growth in a competitive landscape will be key to sustaining investor confidence.
