U.S. equities closed mixed on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, with the Nasdaq Composite leading gains as a surge in AI infrastructure stocks offset weakness among some of the market's largest technology names. The tech-heavy index rose 0.54%, or 143.04 points, to finish at 26,588.49.

AI Infrastructure Outperforms

An equal-weighted basket of AI infrastructure providers, including CoreWeave (NASDAQ:CRWV), Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:SMCI), Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), and Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU), posted an average gain of 11.56%. In contrast, mega-cap platform companies that are major buyers of AI computing—Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL)—saw an average decline of 1.26%. The performance spread between the two groups was a notable 12.82 percentage points.

Index Performance and Breadth

Despite the divergence, the Nasdaq's market-cap weighting meant Nvidia's 3.03% gain helped counterbalance the losses in trillion-dollar peers. The S&P 500 advanced 0.26% to 7,748.50, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.04% to 53,770.27. The Russell 2000 rose 0.61% to 3,045.48. Year-to-date, the Nasdaq is up 14.4%, the S&P 500 has gained 13.2%, the Dow is 11.9% higher, and the Russell 2000 has surged 22.7%.

Market breadth was positive, with advancers outnumbering decliners by a 1.7-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq. There were 123 new 52-week highs and 95 new lows. Trading volume was 15.5 billion shares, 11.4% below the 20-day average of 17.5 billion.

Earnings and Fundamentals

Recent quarterly results have underscored the strength in AI infrastructure. CoreWeave's backlog expanded to $104.2 billion from $99.4 billion in the prior quarter, excluding over $25 billion in commitments secured early in the current quarter. Super Micro projected fiscal 2027 revenue above analyst expectations.

Analysts at MoffettNathanson noted that "project returns are strengthening, even if unit costs are going up too." CoreWeave CEO Michael Intrator said near-term capacity was essentially sold out, giving suppliers rare pricing power.

Mega-Cap Struggles

Among the mega-caps, Microsoft fell 2.26% to $492.43, Amazon declined 1.83% to $267.28, Apple eased 0.87%, and Alphabet dipped 0.08%. Investors showed a clear preference for companies with proven compute demand over those funding massive AI capital expenditures.

Analyst Views and Market Signals

Analyst recommendations remain divided. Goldman Sachs reaffirmed a Buy on Nvidia with a $285 target (27.2% upside). Northland Securities reiterated a Buy on CoreWeave with a $165 target (53.2% upside), while Bernstein maintained a Sell with a $74 target (31.3% downside). For Super Micro, Rosenblatt Securities kept a Buy with a $51 target (35.6% upside), but Bank of America reaffirmed a Sell with a $33 target (12.3% downside).

Price targets for CoreWeave ranged from $74 to $176, while the average target for Super Micro was only 5.64% above its closing price, reflecting uncertainty about margin sustainability.

Economic Data and Fed Outlook

Inflation data provided additional support. The U.S. consumer price index rose 0.1% in July, a 3.4% year-over-year increase. Core prices ticked up 0.2% monthly and 2.5% annually. Energy prices declined 1.5%. Following the release, Treasury yields pulled back, and traders priced in a 62% probability that the Federal Reserve will hold rates steady in September. The Cboe Volatility Index dropped to 14.45, its lowest level since January.

Risks and Outlook

Building AI infrastructure requires substantial investment and reliable power. CoreWeave forecasts capital expenditures of $35 billion to $39 billion in 2026. Dependence on key customers, financing costs, and export restrictions could temper the premium seen on Wednesday.

The July producer price index is due before Thursday's open. A stronger-than-expected figure could reignite rate concerns. For the Nasdaq, the key question is whether AI suppliers can convert limited capacity into sustained revenue while maintaining healthy balance sheets.
