Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) shares closed Friday at $521.95, recording a 5.3% weekly gain that outpaced the broader market, even as the Nasdaq Composite declined 2.1%. The advance came after the chipmaker revealed a strategic partnership and investment commitment with AI startup Anthropic, though the financial terms have raised questions about balance sheet exposure.

Anthropic Deal Details

AMD has pledged up to $5 billion in investment to Anthropic, with the startup planning to deploy up to two gigawatts of AMD's MI450-based Helios systems. The first gigawatt is expected to come online in the first half of 2027. According to Reuters, related server sales could reach tens of billions of dollars, with AMD's investment contingent on achieving specific deployment milestones.

Liquidity Concerns

The commitment represents a substantial portion of AMD's financial resources. As of March 28, the company held $12.3 billion in cash, equivalents, and short-term investments. Initial estimates indicate the Anthropic cap amounts to 40.7% of that available liquidity, roughly 1.7 times AMD's first-quarter operating cash flow. This adds to existing balance-sheet exposure from partner data-center lease guarantees, which carry a maximum gross exposure of $4.1 billion, some with durations extending to 15 years. Combined, the potential maximum totals $9.1 billion, representing 74% of March's liquidity. However, AMD notes this does not represent a projected cash outflow, as the investment depends on future milestones and guarantee exposure diminishes as lease payments occur.

Market Reaction and Analyst Views

Despite the weekly gain, AMD gave back some gains on Friday, closing 5.5% below its Wednesday high of $552.33, as AI-related expenditure worries resurfaced and the semiconductor index fell about 4.3%. eMarketer analyst Jacob Bourne commented, "Each win deepens AMD's credibility as the number-two to Nvidia."

AMD is positioning its Helios system as a comprehensive solution, integrating 72 MI455X accelerators, 18 EPYC processors, networking, and ROCm software. The company claims this setup provides up to 30% higher inference tokens per dollar compared to a leading rival system, based on internal benchmarks. CEO Lisa Su emphasized that achieving AI's potential requires "the entire industry working together," a strategy that reduces customer reliance on a single chip maker but also increases AMD's share of project risk.

Upcoming Catalysts

AMD is scheduled to release second-quarter earnings on August 4, with revenue guidance set at a midpoint of $11.2 billion, representing a 46% year-over-year increase. Non-GAAP gross margin is expected to be around 56%. Before that, chip market sentiment could be influenced by capital spending updates from Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META), and Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN), all due to report results in the coming week.

Investors will be looking for signs that significant orders are converting into cash more quickly than AMD's financial obligations are growing. Risks include potential delays in Anthropic implementations, export restrictions, limited supply, software performance issues, and customer funding challenges that could push back revenue or reduce returns.
