Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ: HOOD) reported a notable rebound in cryptocurrency trading activity for August, yet the figures remain significantly below the levels seen a year earlier. The combined notional volume across the Robinhood app and its acquired exchange, Bitstamp, reached $17.5 billion, representing a 61% increase from July. However, this is still 38% lower than August 2025, underscoring that the recovery is partial at best.
Bitstamp proved to be the dominant driver, contributing $10.1 billion—or 57.7%—of the total crypto volume. The Robinhood app handled $7.4 billion, up 72% from July, while Bitstamp grew 53% sequentially. On a year-over-year basis, the app fell 46%, compared with a 30% decline for Bitstamp. This divergence highlights the strategic importance of the Bitstamp acquisition, which has broadened Robinhood's crypto venue just as market activity begins to pick up.
Investors responded cautiously, with HOOD shares closing at $112.57 on Friday, down 0.7% for the session and approximately 7.8% below the previous Friday's close, according to historical Nasdaq data. The mixed signals—strong monthly growth but persistent year-over-year declines—suggest the market is waiting for more concrete evidence of sustained improvement.
Revenue Conversion Remains Key
While the volume surge is encouraging, it does not directly translate into revenue. Notional volume varies in value depending on asset mix, customer geography, spreads, and fee structures between the Robinhood app and Bitstamp. Additionally, Robinhood Chain activity is excluded from the reported crypto volume, and its sequencer revenue operates under a separate revenue-sharing arrangement. Therefore, a dollar traded on one platform may not be equally profitable as on another.
In the second quarter, Robinhood generated $100 million in cryptocurrency transaction revenue, down 38% year over year. This represented about 13% of the company's $776 million in transaction-based revenue and 7.6% of total net revenue of $1.31 billion. Other segments performed better: event contracts brought in $156 million, options $342 million, and equities $129 million. These figures, disclosed in the company's Q2 filing, illustrate that while crypto is important, it is not the sole driver of Robinhood's financial performance.
Broader Platform Metrics Show Strength
Beyond crypto, Robinhood's August dashboard revealed robust growth in other areas. Equity notional volume climbed 68% year over year to $335.4 billion, while options contracts rose 50% to 292.5 million. Total platform assets reached $383.7 billion, up 26%, and funded customers increased by 1.9 million to 28.6 million. Net deposits for the month were $4.0 billion.
However, not all newer business lines performed consistently. Event contracts fell 23% from July to 4.7 billion, although they were 15 times higher than a year earlier. Securities-lending revenue declined 10% sequentially and 32% from a year ago. These fluctuations underscore that Robinhood's revenue streams can be volatile from month to month.
What Would Signal a Stronger Recovery?
The bullish interpretation is that Bitstamp is fulfilling its intended role—expanding Robinhood's addressable market and contributing more than half of consolidated crypto volume. The 72% monthly rebound in the core app adds weight to the argument that the improvement is not solely attributable to the acquisition.
On the other hand, the year-over-year comparison remains a concern. Combined crypto volume is still $10.6 billion below August 2025, with the app alone $6.3 billion lower. Until that gap narrows, or until Robinhood demonstrates that Bitstamp and Chain produce a superior take rate, the 61% monthly jump should be viewed as a recovery from a low base rather than a new earnings trajectory.
For investors, the next critical data point will be revenue conversion—how crypto transaction revenue relates to app and Bitstamp volume, along with any separately disclosed Robinhood Chain contribution. August provided the raw material; the upcoming earnings report will reveal its actual value.
