Ondas Inc. (NASDAQ:ONDS) announced a pair of U.S. defense contracts worth more than $56 million combined, a figure that exceeds the company's first-quarter revenue of $50.1 million. The announcements, made Wednesday and Thursday, include a U.S. Army order valued above $50 million and an Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) award exceeding $6 million.

Despite the significant contract value, the stock slipped 1.35% over the two days of announcements, closing Thursday at $8.74. In premarket trading Friday, shares were up 2.06% to $8.92, indicating a tentative investor response. The muted reaction highlights a key concern: while demand is evident, the timeline for converting these awards into recognized revenue remains unclear.

The combined value of the awards represents more than 111.7% of Ondas' first-quarter revenue and over 10% of the company's 2026 revenue target of at least $525 million. However, analysts caution that contract value does not directly translate into immediate revenue, and the company has not yet provided a revenue-recognition schedule for the expanded orders.

The U.S. Army contract is part of a $982 million multi-year IDIQ (Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity) agreement. Ondas reported that its subsidiary, Mistral, has now received cumulative awards exceeding $240 million under this program. Production is already underway for systems from an initial $190.8 million order, with deliveries expected in the third quarter.

The AFRL award, announced Thursday, supports the Long-Range Grasshopper autonomous delivery system at Ondas Sentinel, designed to transport payloads up to 500 pounds. This development extends Ondas' footprint in defense and autonomous systems, aligning with its growth strategy.

Chief Executive Eric Brock emphasized the company's focus on execution following the Army contract, but investors are awaiting concrete evidence of revenue conversion. The upcoming second-quarter earnings report, scheduled for August 13 at 08:30 EDT, will be a critical test. Analysts expect revenue of $67.97 million for Q2, which would bring first-half revenue to approximately $118.09 million. To meet the $525 million annual target, Ondas would need to secure roughly $406.91 million in the second half.

Initial consensus estimates for Q3 and Q4 suggest combined revenue of about $408.53 million, leaving a slim margin of just $1.62 million above the minimum requirement. This tight cushion underscores the importance of delivery schedules over total award figures.

Ondas' stock performance over the two-day announcement window lagged AeroVironment Inc. (NASDAQ:AVAV), which rose 1.24%, but outperformed Red Cat Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:RCAT), which fell 2.14%. The mixed performance among peers suggests no clear sector-wide trend, leaving company-specific factors as the likely driver.

Sell-side analysts remain optimistic, with a consensus rating of "Strong Buy" and an average price target of $19.81. Target estimates range from $16 to $25, with recent updates from firms like Maxim Group, Stifel Nicolaus, H.C. Wainwright, Northland Securities, and Needham. However, these projections are not guarantees.

Risks include uncertainty around revenue recognition for the new awards, the dilutive impact of the DZYNE acquisition (which involved issuing approximately 85 million shares, with 45 million under a six-month lock-up), and a first-quarter adjusted EBITDA loss of $10.9 million. Management has indicated that adjusted EBITDA losses are expected to peak in Q2.

As Ondas prepares to report earnings, investors will scrutinize Q2 revenue, backlog conversion pace, and any updates to the $525 million goal. The company's ability to execute on its delivery schedule will be more telling than headline award numbers.
